Dear Malleswari,

suggest you to compile your report in following format

1. Brief out various details and spect of cables like Power cable, Instrument Cable, Networking cable.

2. Carry out differentiation table for the same.

3. Brief out on cable trays, voltage insulation, and voltage drops, current carrying capacity of cable, AWG standards, shielding, screening...etc includes some graphs to spell out these spects.

4. Google over the major supplier/ distributor for these cables in India.

This is enough research to get depth knowledge of cables.

Usually, when I'm required to report on something like this, I get details from my boss on what he wants to find in it.

The words "preparing a report of instrumentation cables" or "preparing a report of communication systems" is terribly vague. If I take it literally, I only need to prepare a report, not actually submit it, which seems a waste of time.

There are several types of instrumentation cables and even more types of communication systems. Does he want a list of instrumentation cables and their applications? Or does he want to know about just one or two and how they compare or if they can be used in a particular application?

Forgive me for saying this but your question is just as vague as your boss' instructions. I suggest you go back to him and ask what he wants to see in your reports.

As said by Vulcan your question is not so clear. You can directly ask your boss what he exactly need. If you do not understand what he explained you, you can ask in a gentle way to repeat or to explain in a more simple form. Ok, coming to "preparing a report of instrumetation cables "; generally this is done in a new peoject (Under Construction Process plant or in any expansion or installation of new equipment). You have to read the drawings and have to make a list like 1. Cable Tag No. 2. To which instrument in the field it is connected 3. Is it going directly from the istrument to the control room or going through a transmitter 4. Tag no. of the instrument it is going to 5. Its I/O number (Slot) in PLC or MCC 6. Cable lenght 7. Core/Type 8. In which cable tray it is going 9. The elivation of the cable tray from zero level (Ground level) 10. Details of the signal it carries This is the general format which we can follow to prepare a report on Istrumentation cables. I have presented you with assuming that you are working for a project. The way you can make a report changes from company to company and appliction to application. You said that you are a trainee, if u can tell me in which industry you are working in and the work u do then we can give a more accurate answer; anyway, have a nice time in your new career. Learn more from every experince, get more data from your boss.
