Hello Guest,

It is normal for your PC to reboot after the BIOS has been updated, or sometimes after a Format.

it is not clear what your present problem is.

Can you access the BIOS?

Can you access Windows?

Advise further, with

Kind Regards....

Ok I'll try to explain again best I can, sorry i'm not the most computer savvy. Basically windows can load up just fine and stay on - play games, music, movies, etc.. But whenever I am in dos/bios mode whatever the pre load up thing us, it will just shut itself off after a minute, sometimes longer. It does this for everything..windows repair, bios screen, trying to format etc.. I don't know if this could be a hardware problem or not since it all seems to work and is stable once windows loaded up and I'm there.

Heres my specs from running dxdiag....

System Make/Model; HP Pavilion dv5000

Processor: AMd Turion(tm)64 Mobile Technology ~1.8Ghz

Memory:894mb RAM

If any more information needed let me know..this is getting irritating

Hello again, Guest.

You didn't advise what Operating System you are using. If WinXP, advise Home or Professional version, and the SP update/s versions you have from the Windowsupdate site, and you have installed.

I have never been in favour of the pre-loaded by the "Maker (HP, Dell, IBM and the like)" Software.

It is better to have a "Clean Instal", of the BIOS, unhampered by the clutter of the "Maker", and that goes for all PC's.

Presumably you have contacted HP about your problem, and not yet received a reply from them.

Did you or another person place a password on the BIOS?

Depending on where you received your BIOS from, there may be an auto-restriction on BIOS access.

What you could do, in case the BIOS update was imperfect, is to run the BIOS Update again.

Presumably you followed the BIOS Update sequence carefully, the general procedure is to download the BIOS Flash file to a floppy disk, then insert that into the floppy drive (Ensure that Floppy Drive is First on the Boot Sequence - set that in the BIOS), and re-boot.

The PC Boots and updates immediately the BIOS from the floppy disk, then carefully follow the instructions.

It may be that your BIOS Upgrade has some conflicts with the Motherboard.

Advise further, please.

Kind Regards....

You want to use minimum memory as caramba suggested when flash BIOS and as

Sparkstation intoned get the BIOS update from the chip manufacturer and follow directions; a floppy is no longer required the process can be accomplished from download on AMD site.

It may be problem with RAM. If your 1GB RAM composes of of two memory modules, try to remove one and check --- how it goes then. If you have enough time (1 minute or so) can you turn off BIOS cacheable and video cacheable options in your BIOS setup?

Check your MB Lithium battery (replace one).

Your problems can be caused by power supply unit as well.

Just might be one of the solutions( does not belong to software problems)You may check inside cooling fans whether operating or not when you switch on your computer.

Please describe your problem again, step by step (actions and observations) from the time you press On button to time Windows (etc) loads. It doesn't seem like you're having a problem, really, if by "shuts off" you mean your monitor screen goes black...then comes back. If the computer actually shut off, then you would have to push start button to reboot. Thanks for clarifying.... if you please.

I think you are saying that it locks up on start-up. Is that correct? If so, how do you get into windows? It it intermittent? If it is locking up in. Intermittent problems typically indicate a hardware issues. I would try running memtest86. www.memtest86.com/download.html

Did you try unplugging the Pavilion, waiting a spell, and plugging it back in?

Is it possible your backup (clock and settings maintenance) battery is dead or not being charged/keeping charge? So that disk read (boot) error is occurring because disk type/configuration is not recognized...because disc parameters are not being retained in BIOS?

I'm having the same problem with my hp pavilion dv8000. It will boot windows fine. But if I just boot, press F10 to get into setup mode, it will enter setup mode and within 10 seconds it will just power off without warning. It does the same thing if I try and run anything from a boot cd, power off without warning within a few seconds. It will do the same thing when I try and ghost backup the system. But if I let it boot windows, windows will run fine. Ocasionally it will shutoff (not shutdown, but power off) while running windows, but that is rare. I have the latest bios installed, have tried different memory sims. Running windows XP all up to date. But then again, windows seems to run fine. I'm suspecting something temperature related or something, but since it powers off so quickly after boot into setup mode and runs fine in windows Im not sure. Looking for any suggestions.

I got similar problem with my Compaq nx9420. It was the temperature issue. The only remedy was tidying its up from inside then replacing cooling system. It'd be better if done by specialist.
