Type "T" thermocouples

05/09/2008 11:54 AM

I have a type T thermocouple with a very small bead on the tip, approximately 1/8" in diameter. The outer insulation is brown and the inner wires are red and blue. It is about 12' long resembling standard thermocouple extension wire with the exception of the bead on the tip. I'm having trouble locating a vendor for this style thermocouple without having them special made. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? I've looked at many sites already and haven't seen anything than looks like mine.

Sounds like someone made up a TC using some sort of lead wire, (I've not seen brown type T wire, the color code for the US is blue).. That's fine for use under about 100C, that's not critical.

You can find the real thing here:

http://www.omega.com/ppt/pptsc.asp?ref=ICIN&Nav=tema04

It's probably not going to matter what type of insulation is on the TC itself. It doesn't matter if it doesn't look the same. As long as it fits through your hole.

Just to starighten things out:

Brown is the outer sheath colour for ANSI MC96.1 Thermocouple grade wire straight out of the Omega Temperature Measurment & Control Handbook.

Pages & pages available on www.omega.com typically $39 for 1m length type T which you can cut down to length if required

You are correct gasman, the TC's can be brown, ANSI leadwire is blue.

From what you are describing, your TC looks to me as a Copper/Constantan beaded couple. The red colour conductor being the negative side. The beaded side being the TC junction. Buy the TC lead and make it yourself, If you have the means and the know-how (simple) to silver braze...

Nothing fancy, could be obtained from any TC supply source. maybe using different colour coding, if not ANSI.

Wangito.

Is there any special reason why you want the exact, same type that you have?

Technically speaking, there's no reason why you can't use any other Type T thermocouple. Just tell your supplier that you need this type and just use whatever he gives you. 'Should work with no problem.

I appreciate the input from everyone, It was all helpful. To answer a couple of questions so I don't leave everyone in the dark, I could have made my own with extension wire, but it is exposed to some harsh vapors. I did that to get by until I could find the proper type / style. The reason I want to stay with the same style is that this type is used in at least 6 different units in house, and I like uniformity. I did find the exact type and style through Cole Parmer. Thanks for your responses.
