Bowling Alley

05/11/2008 11:35 AM

Hello, my buddy owns a bowling alley, and he want to take down the drapes and put on drywall, but we're afraid that I might be to noisy, what would be the best finish we could install on the wall, so that we could take down those ugly looking drapes.

Or, is there a so call machine of some kind, that would absorb the noise...thanks

You could look at acoustic wallboard, but that's more expensive than drywall. A good acoustic tile ceiling would help. But, the big problem is all those hard alleys are gonna bounce sound like nobody's business.

If it were mine, I'd put up the drywall (insulate behind it so it doesn't "drum"). If it turns out to be noisy, I'd buy some colorful pieces of carpet remnants, mount them on different size sheets of 1/8 luan plywood and hang them on the walls, telling people I had good taste.

You might visit other bowling alleys for ideas, but the drapes are an integral part of your noise control. TVP45 has a good answer, there are other approaches, and companies that specialize in sound treatments. Your budget will determine the approach.

PLEASE check the fire code and product flammability before you install any material. This is but one tragic example of using inexpensive products which worked well for sound insulation but created an unacceptable hazard.

Noise canceling devices are available but are incredibly expensive last time I looked. For the walls you would need some kind of foam or spongy material to absorb the sound your assumption that they are there to absorb sound is correct. Egg cartons are good material. some type of durable soft foam. Or even better the best of all a new set of curtains. because a soft hanging cloth is the best type of sound absorption.
