Mol's of just H and O

05/13/2008 8:04 PM

I would like to know all the molecules that consist of just H and O atoms, other then water. I remember reading about some kind of fuel that's like this but can't find it anymore.

That would be the electrolysis tinkerers and yes, it is some kind of fuel.

Of course how could we possibly forget dihydrogen monoxide from your list.

Buzneg, There are few molecules other than Water that consist of just Hydrogen and Oxygen. One is Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). It can, and has been used as a propellant in rockets because of it's violent decay into Water and free oxygen. When the pressure is released (it must be made under pressure and in darkness because light in the visible spectrum causes it to decay) it expands violently.

I do not know if you remember a device touted as a Jet or Rocket Pack in the late sixties or early seventies, but it's source of motive power was Hydrogen Peroxide.

When you hear the mention of "heavy water" that is Di-Deuterium Oxide, "triple heavy water" is Di-Tritium Oxide. Deuterium is an Isotope of Hydrogen containing a neutron in the nucleus that Hydrogen does not have. Tritium's nucleus contains two neutrons.

I hope I have not offended with this basic chemistry explanation.

Regards, Dragon

Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2)? It is a powerful oxidising agent, not a "fuel" in the accepted sense. Further information may be gleaned from any on-line encyclopaedia.
