Looking For Munsell Color Equations

05/20/2008 11:11 PM

I work in wastewater treatment, and part of what I do is labwork. We have a dye plant that discharges to one of my plants, and we are required to test for color in the effluent. The test we use is out of Standard Methods, 2120E ADMI Tristimulus Method. The sample is put into a spectrophotometer, and the final values from that are compared to charts that look a lot like logarithm charts to get final Munsell values.

I've been looking for a long time for the Bridgeman equations used to generate the Munsell values charts. No, it's not required for our permit, but, personally speaking, I would prefer a more exact number than the ones given by the charts, however close an approximation that may be. I've asked the engineers at the dye house. They don't know. I've asked the State engineers. They don't know. I've combed through every library and Internet source I've been able to find. No luck there, either.

Is there anybody on CR4 that knows the Bridgeman equations? If so, would you please share and save me from eternal frustration?

Thanks --
Dave M.

Hello Dave M.

Refer: http://www.umass.edu/tei/mwwp/acrobat/epa110.1colorspec.pdf

Advise whether that's what you are needing.

Kind Regards....

I have that; that's pretty much what's covered in Standard Methods. What I'm looking for is the equation described in 9.2: "...the equation suggested by Bridgeman."

9.0 Calculations

9.1 Calculate intermediate Tristimulus values for samples and standards from the transmittance data in 8.3 using the following equations: Xs = (T3 × 0.1899) + (T1×0.791) Ys = T2 Zs =T3 × 1.1835 where:T1 = transmittance value in % using filter number 1; T2 = transmittance value in % using filter number 2; T3 = transmittance value in % using filter number 3.

9.2 Convert Tristimulus values to the corresponding Munsell values Vx, Vy andVz, by the use of published tables 2, 3, 4 or the equation suggested by Bridgeman.

Hello again, Dave M.

After some research, located this: http://www.sightresearch.net/pdf/17Performance1a.pdf

Advise if that assists, or whether you already looked there.

Thank you for helping me improve my education in the field of colour perception and matching.

Kind Regards....

If you have not yet figurred it out. Try using the ASTM D1535 procedure. This is an updated method for for converting Tristimulus Yxy values to Munsell Notation.

Of course a better use of your time would be to take a quick course in color science so you could understand why your intentions are a waste of time. You don't need a sledgehammer to push a thumbtack into a corkboard.

Hi all,

I got the same problem like you in the past. I'm looking for the Munsell values tables or Bridgeman Equation in order to measure ADMI of dye waste.

I wonder if u have them now and could you show me how to get them?

My Email is huybkk47@yahoo.com

Sincerely thanks!
