ultra small air compressor

How much pressure do you need, and what flow-rate?

I am not sure on the pressure just yet, but the flow rate must be maintain at a very constant rate. I am thinking at least 90lbs psi. I still need to do some testing. I thank all for their comments.

Then you will need a compressor that will supply more flow than you need and a tank with an outlet regulator.

Then you can size your compressor, maybe a bit larger than you are wanting!

Yeah you guys got it. A 12 V auto compressor with a power supply converter in case you have to connect that puppy at residential site somewhere else. And probably get couples of quick disconnect air fittings for your applications. Oh and don't forget to take with you some good rated extra few feets electric extension cable if possible with some GFI protection just in case any unexpectable damp conditions present it suddenly, you never know. That will take care off the hook. Hehehehihaha.. You have the technology... And who know's? Probably a solar power pack too to be in the edge now, can you imagine that? Waaoouuuh!

How about leaving the compressor in the car/truck and carry a backpack with 1-2 dive tanks, then you have a nice air receiver and supply unit that is portable.

How small is "very small"? Please decribe the application and we can better understand what might work best.

I suggest you browse the model and hobby shops. Most will have small compressors for "air brush" operation. Weigh around 1.5Kg (3 pounds), run from mains supply, double insulated, run up to around 7 bar. A friend has one with a 3 liter accumulator so he doesn't have to listen to the motor cycling as often.

Model painters also use disposable compressed air cylinders 5cm diameter, 20 cm long (2" x 8") as an air source before they take the plunge and borrow a compressor from a mate.

Your choice will really depend on the air flow required and usage.

Are you driving nails, twisting nuts, blowing up tires?

Nail guns can be had that have the compressor build in and run off a battery pack.

Air driven torque wrenches take a lot of air, but you can get electric, both 12 volt and 110/220V.

12V compressors with built in battery, charger, that can jump your car, and have a 12 volt and via a converter 110 volt outlet. Fairly cheap too.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention the small pancake or bullet tank compressers that run on you mains current.

There is one Taiwan make portable "Mini Air Compressor" which is used by artists with small pen type of gun for paintings . Please specify application so everyone can suggest you proper machine.

Hard to know what to advise you on , not knowing how much air you need, but, you can get a plethora of small compressors, some capable of 160psi, at auto and 4WD supply stores. You need storage? Just add a tank.

These units universally run on 12volts and are either clipped tomthe battery or are run from the cigar lighter socket. They're mostly used for tyre inflation.

When in airframes repair I'd routinely R/R air compressors that would fit inside a film canister.

Then there are the Blood Pressure Cuffs that fit on your arm and run on a 9Volt battery that are about as small as you can get.

Try Halfords (usual disclaimer). They do ones that plug into a car cigarette lighter socket for reinflating tyres.

The air compressors used in the automotive field for air ride suspensions tend to be very high performance designs. That equals high price. Two manufactures that I am failure with that manufacture industrial quality small compressors are Thomas, and Gast. As bwire stated Grainger is a good way to compare models. Another source is MSC. Try www.mscdirect.com or www.grainger.com. If you decide to use quick connect fittings, keep this in mind. Quick connect fittings tend to leak more than a more permanent connection. On a small compressor it might be a problem to maintain satisfactory performance. Good luck.

Try an art supply store. We have a store in Canada called Curry's. They sell small compresssors. Maybe you have something like it in your area, or see if they would ship it to you.
