Back when I worked for an instrumentation contractor, my job was to design or develop instrumentation and control systems for our clients. When something goes wrong, I change into a troubleshooter.
When I left that job to work in a factory, my job was to maintain the instrumentation and control systems. I generally keep them working and fix them when they go bad. Occassionally, I need to go beyond being an instrumentation technician and analyze the process too.
My answer is too broad I know but your question is not specific enough either.
