Determining Impact Penetration & Stationary Object Movement

06/02/2008 7:54 AM

I am looking for a formula to measure impact penetration and object movement. The senario is this: I have a 6500 lbs concrete object measuring 52" square at it's base. Standing 48" tall setting on an asphalt surface. I was to measure the amount of movement when struck with a 5500 object traveling at 30 mph. I need a formula to solve this equation.

It's easy to suggest looking at the coefficient of friction between concrete and asphalt, and evaluate the amount of energy to be dissipated from the system and hence the movement of the object. The equations would not take into account the energy lost by the impacting object, the partial disassembly of both it and the block, the overturning tendency of both objects and the energy dissipated by partial ploughing-up of the asphalt surface by both. It's one of those classic scenarios where formal equations can only take one so far. The rest has to be determined by local testing.

Northwestern University did testing of this type about 1973 for determining degree and damage assessments for vehicle accident impact speed measurements and associated details.

Your turn...
