Compressed Air Pulsation Measurement Instrument

06/04/2008 2:36 AM

Hello Sir,

I am Vipul Patel. I am doing M.Tech in Nirma University . I have taken my project at INGERS0LL-RAND. My project is a minimizing pulsation in compressor outlet pipe. So for minimizing vibration first we have to measure that vibration in the pipe at the compressor outlet so we require a fluid pulsation measurement instrument so please give me information about instrument which serve our purpose.

accelerometer (digital, piezoelectric), digital flowmeter, digital pressure gauge, strain gauge(s).

I doubt that you can get a ready to use instrument for your pneumatic pulse measurement. However you can get a piezoelectric sensor. This gives a voltage corresponding to the pressure. You might view the voltage on an oscilloscope and get an idea of the pressure pulse shape. Standard pressure gauges cannot follow the rapid fluctuations in pressure. But how do you plan to modify the compressor to reduce the pressure pulsation (if you can divulge it) ?

Thank you for giving me valuable information but I also wanted to know which company manufacture this type of instrument I am planning to apply volume bottle for that pulsation compansation but It can be applicable only to the large compressor but for small compressor I still have doubt I am thinking for modification of design.

Piezoelectric sensors are available. You can try Ifm Electronic India Branch office, Kolhapur, or Integrated Process Automation (IPA), Bangalore, etc.

The volume air bottle idea is of course the obvious solution for damping pressure pulsation. But I was hoping that you might be working on modifying the compressor itself to reduce pressure pulsation.

Caramba and Yanthram are right on in recommending a dynamic pressure measurement sensor. A piezometric pressure sensor (check for example Endevco, PCB Piezotronics, Honeywell, etc) will give you the appropriately fast response to accurately measure pressure pulsations and perhaps even 'see' the pressure profile.

This type of device needs to be hooked up to an appropriate data logger. You can use an oscilloscope, particularly if it has high speed data logging capabilities. Personally, I have used an IoTech Wavebook at 1MHz to log the pressure profile at the outlet of vehicle superchargers. There are many good data loggers out there (try Somat, IoTech, Yokogawa, etc) and the cost of capable units is getting better all the time. If you don't have the logger, might there be a company near you that would rent/lease one to you? You'll likely have to acquire the dynamic transducer separately as it is a more specialized device...

Best of luck, let us know how you make out.

AndyC.

When I pointed out a peizo accelerometers I did this only as a piezo- sensors are just now very affordable and very popular. But I state that average response of old strain gauge based transducers will be likely enough for studying such kind of processes due to this, though.

I can't recommend certain brand as my own preferences are my own but such kind of transducers could be googled easy.

Suggest you approach the problem by multiplying the rpm of the compressor by 60. This will give you the pulses per second for a 1 cylinder compressor. Multiply that answer by 10 to calculate the minimum resonant frequency a sensor should have to measure the pressure pulses. Thus, a 1 cylinder comressor turning at 1750 rpm should be instrumented with a pressure sensor with a resonant frequency no less than 290 hz. The sensor should be located in the compressor outlet port and should have a volume that is small compared to the volume of the port. With this arrangement , you can read the pressure pulses on an oscilloscope. The pulses will appear superimposed on the meter reading of the pressure gauge if the tranducer is dc coupled to the scope.

to measure vibaration its digital flow meter and second depending on speed verses rpm than you should torche digital where flow is measure and rotation as well. You can digital pressure gauge depeding on what PSI Measuring.

Thanks and good luck

You already got this answer, but I usually use dynamic pressure sensors from PCB piezotronics for this kind of work. They do a great job...
