A Public Appeal to the CR4 Gods

06/07/2008 5:30 PM

I changed my avatar (yet again) and noticed that CR4 wouldn't scale my new avatar (originally 800x800 pixels) any larger than 80x80 pixels.

Curiously, however, the avatar appearing in RCE's posts has a 100x100-pixel format. How'd he do that? Does CR4 have a hidden 'God Mode' that one can enter only by pressing a secret key combination?

Seriously, though, what struck me about RCE's larger format is that it is so much easier on the eyes. For once I didn't have to squint at a tiny image to see the details!

Small images are a problem for us nearly-blind folk. I've never liked the fact that I can't make sense out of many of the avatars I see here unless the pic is of something fairly simple. I've even asked a few members to please describe their avatars or, better yet, to please post larger images of them in a reply.

Look, if it's an image you wanna see, there's nothing quite like looking at a big one!

RCE's 100x100 format is close to the lower limit of what I can see clearly given an image with that level of detail. I wear corrective lenses, such as they are, but they are able to fix only some things well and not others. The rest is a crap shoot.

So, with RCE's unwitting inspiration in hand, I'd like to ask CR4 to thoughtfully consider scaling things up a bit for us folk who don't see so well. Not just the avatars, but the other way-too-small images here on CR4, as well. We'd really appreciate that!

Sincerely,

Great idea IFF everyone had "fast" download capability. Currently running 37k/sec (yes, the numbers and units are correct.)

Every pixel that has to be moved increases the information that needs to be transferred.

I propose instead that forums, discussion threads and all such be default to no avatar with a "click on empty box" to have it pop up.

(Let's see if that gets some discussion burning.)

It's currently a good day! (Usually runs around 34k)

But in reality, I'm 12km from the nearest suitable node for what in Australia passes for high speed and the $$$ involved to connect to satelite are unattractive, since would still have to maintain land line for voice communication. (signal delays associated with voice on satelite connections)

So that's what I get through the copper network.

Could someone please help me understand the purpose of the avatar? Why does one NEED an avatar in the first place?

This is not an obligation.

I found it funny to see how revealing some are of their master's Persona...

I like my avatar the way it it, and the only way you'll change it is over my cold stinking body!

(OPPS, I thought this had something to do with my right to have guns! Never mind. )

An avatar is a tiny being who sallies forth to do battle for you. Each time your avatar loses, a portion of your soul is eroded, in time you are gone.

There are more ways to skin a cat th...Ooops sorry Del!...

To do battle often can be avoided with words or with a cunning disguise - my little panda for example disguises the fact that I will battle, but would prefer to play and entertain

I don't think an apology to Del is needed. That saying refers to skinning catfish. I know of three general ways to do that. There are minor variations on those three, and other approaches, I'm sure, of which I am ignorant.

Huh?! What's the purpose of any public "information" sharing website? Or most any program "content" for that matter. Why, entertainment, of course...complete with costume changes.

Some kids like to read the words; some like to look at the pictures.

And, what's the use of all this "hi tek" anyway, if people can't waste time on it?

Avatar is Indian word originally. It has two meanings

1. Reincarnation

2. Ugly Look

Just for your information

Now I am REALLY confused. What does reincarnation or ugly look have to do with sending a surrogate out to do your battles? And, if your avatar gets eaten up and you disappear, does the reincarnation let you come back with a different avatar? And just what is the relationship between reincarnation and an ugly look? Only the ugly get reincarnated???

Yes I can get any size avatar that you want. Send the required money (American Dollars only) to me directly. The price is only $10 per sq pixel above the complimentary 80x80. May is the annual buy one get one free sale. Oh sorry, too late you just missed the deadline. Price does not include postage and handling. Void where taxed or prohibited by law.

Hear Hear! Supposedly CR4 is set up so those with questions can ask of those with experience. Experience comes with age and most of us aging, experienced people have eyesight issues.

I have asked about the crummy small format before, but never really got a satisfactory answer. If I have to strain to read something I am more likely to skip it.

Re: A Public Appeal to the CR4 Gods

But the question was not posted to the Feedback subforum where it stands a better chance of capturing the gods' attentions. But if it had been, I'm wondering if the reply might not have been to use viewer accomodation facilities (settings, including monitor settings) provide in the operating system, or browser...on a tailored-to-individual-user level? And I wonder if it might not be the case that the gods would be leery of telling people this, for fear of embarrassing them? Obviously there are trade-offs/happy mediums to be considered by designer and host in the appearance of a Web page...so that if all people can't be pleased, and all people conditions can't be accommodated, it makes sense to satisfy the majority. I have a slight loss of close-up focus compensation which makes viewing my high-resolution monitor a bit fuzzy as well. Two solutions work very well for me: I wear low (#1) magnification reading specs at the monitor; I wear a visor bill (just like an accounting or legal clerk or in a library) to shade my eyes from overhead and surrounding light that can make monitor viewing less clear and more uncomfortable...and also lead quickly to eye fatigue. (I had spent considerable time trying to change my display to emulate old amber on black monochrome monitors which studies, and I, had found to be least deleterious to sight...until the idea struck one day that it wasn't monitor over intensity, or blue display, that was mostly causing distress; it was trying to view one light source, the monitor, with light coming from other light sources. It was my eyes straining to contend (to focus and regulate light) with so many light sources and directions causing the pain and fatigue...mostly overhead room lighting. Blocking out the overhead light with a visor bill (or billed cap) solved the problem.)

Hope this helps some.
