If you won the lottery ...

06/14/2008 6:12 AM

" ... younger managers in the engineering sector are driven by ethics and a sense of purpose. Only 2 percent claimed they 'would quit their job tomorrow' if they won the lottery ...' ..."

This is from an article in Panel & System Building Magazine. This bit's about "younger managers" - but how about some of us Old Fart Engineers? What would you do?

[Apologies if this topic's already been covered, but if it has, I missed it.]

I'd cut down from a 3 day to a 2 day week. I'd rent a little unit as a workshop, I've always wanted a lockup under a railway arch

As a kid we lived in Rugby...plenty of railway action there... and I remeber reading a Bulldog Drummond book where these chaps were building a racing car in a garage under an arch...the badies were trying to sbaotage their car ripping good yarns eh what?

Del. (Yeh and the doors have just got to painted green )

(PS Don't worry Bulldog won in the end )

If I won a really big lottery, I'd quite my job and go into business still doing the same thing I'm doing now but I'll be my own boss...maybe.

I could go into business doing something entirely different but still utilizing my skills and knowledge...like writing a book on instrumentation.

I could go into business doing something entirely different but not using any of the skills or knowledge of my trade...like opening a restaurant...but then it would be my wife' cooking skills at work. I'll just be sampling her products.

Bottom line...I'd quite my job.

You could hire me as your assistant

The first thing I would do is to install a thousand plus watt sound system in the company vehicle. Next I would insert a a copy of "Take this job and shove it" (if you remember the old country western song), lock the control panel on the music system (full volume) and park the vehicle blocking the front door of the office, so the boss had to move it before he could enter the office.

OF course being a good little engineer I would have installed a latch relay, so once the system was activated it could not be shut down.

Next I would build my own shop with all the little toys I've always wanted and play mad scientist.

If sufficient cash still existed I would create a trust fund to allow for free psychological counseling of our younger colleagues.

I might actually stay on. I am having a lot of fun with what I am doing, and making a pretty good living...

But I would be ready to walk at a moments notice, and I would not put up with the management BS that I have to put up with now, so I would probably end up getting myself fired.

I think starting my own business would be good....

I'll join your opinion: stay in the actual position to start.

But I'd finish the house while taking a nice holyday in a resort.

After this I would not be that easy anymore: I just answer what I really think on some of the decisions, and some people will get a hard time.

After getting fired (yes I'm realistic on the results of my behaviour) I start an own business, just to entertain myself. Stirling engines or someting like that.

Invest it so that I could play when I want to and work when I want to.

By work I mean have my on little shop(not a business) to create in.

I like my job so wouldn't quit just tell the boss like it is. Let the know I'm available to get them out of jam if they need me.

I'd negotiate a couple of extra weeks vacation (holidays) so that I could broaden my knowledge.

I love what I do, but I could be persuaded that with more travel , I 'd do it even better.

And I would buy myself the digital camera system of my dreams, and hire a photoshop personal trainer until I was as good as the young ones are.

Maybe I 'd go take a picture of the full Krisdel(tm) product line.

If I came into sudden wealth, I would first make sure the taxes get paid, pay off all debts, invest about at least a fourth of what's left, buy the vehicles I wanted, buy a house capable of accommodating a ham radio station, a home network, and a drafting table, and I would finish my education, with the goal of becoming a meteorologist/engineer/storm chaser.

I would keep working, taking off only to study or chase storms. Eventually, I would start a business as a consultant evaluating industrial or commercial properties for their ability to withstand storms or other natural disasters, and also advise them towards disaster mitigation.

Of course, I would do all that after making myself 20-30 years younger so I would have the energy to do it all.

ya, ditto all the above. I love to travel now, and wealth would give me the opportunity to visit every country in the world. The job would be a distant memory. I would own nothing, just rent everything. I would endeavor to get the best education that money can buy. And, of course, attract the really hot babes...

I will stay in the same job and the same company, just perhaps I'd invest some money in getting at least 51% stock, and control the company. I don't want to be CEO nor something similar. Just whisper on the CEO ears when some bean counter is disturbing the good work of engineers

Best regards

Nice.

Actually 9.9 % of stock would probably give you voting control...

Nothing would change but, my plans will accelerate because I could afford to hire people to get the work done faster, Startup would change from developing capital to expanding market.

So I would be investing, but in myself.

Nop, most lottery winners went bankrupt in first 2 years.

Its not about how much money you have, it about how you manage them.

People buy big house, exotic cars without knowing how much it cost to keep them.
