project topics!

06/15/2008 5:46 AM

Hello Everyone!!

I am mechanical engineering student, in III year.

I have to submit a project this year, but im not getting any good challenging, innovative topics.

Please can you help me out?

My areas of intrest are MEMS, IC engines, Non- conventional energy resources, or any related subjects...

please give me some innovative ideas or concept.

MEMS...hardly going to make any yourself?!..
IC engines...see above

Non- conventional energy resources..
Ha! Now you are talking...
Wind gen for domestic urban environment to capure low level/gusty wind.
Solar cooker/kettle/toaster.
DIY Gound source heat retrieval.

Something I've been mulling over.
Domestic heat exchanging extractor fan to take the stink out of the toilet without wasting the heat

Note: All designs based on these suggestions will become property of KrisDelTM Virtual Products limited (don't worry that's just a silly 'in' joke).

Thanks!!

How about usuing or trying different types of fuels or mixtures of fuels on engines??

I still have one year in my hand..

I have to submit it a end of this acedamic year (June 2009)!!!

But I want it to be really innovative & something out of way!

so im trying my best to do it..

Im ready to put any amount of effort to acehive it...

"Silly 'in' joke" my flat feet! Y'all's usurious licensing agreements on your patented time machine have stymied development of my own perpetual motion machine to no end! Grumble, gripe, grumble, gettin' my gun, grouse, grouse...

Not sure if its been thought of or done already, but...

Its interesting that companies use air-conditioners to cool computer rooms and another system to heat the offices, how about combining the 2?

Or water reclamation?

Where you have an industrial estate, soo much rooves and concrete areas, and the water just goes down a drain pit and away, why not reclaim this for use?

Combine a normal 4-cyl engine and a rotary engine for supercharging application, in 1 unit, see if there are possible performance gain to be found?

Close your eyes and imagine, something simple at first may lead the way to a breakthru, or a real challenge later down the line, or something challenging from the start, and you find that its been done before.

Good idea Snake. My senior project was with Peltier devices. One side gets hot the cool. So why not have a section of wall or ceiling covered in these guys and presto one side of the wall is warm the other is cool. A little circulation fan action and you knock out two birds with one stone!!

Theses can be fitted with water jackets also to cool hard to reach areas.

I have the "mechanical mathematician" the pulser pump and the tracking solar accumulator project. The only person that ever worked on them is me so there is lots of room for improvement. I am a poor technician in more ways than one. Another project I am keen on starting is the "mini power tower project" That would be heliostats (banks of small flat mirrors) on flat roofs of apartment buildings with a simple mechanical tracking system. Something like what puppeteer John cusack did in the movie being john Malcovich. I believe very simple tracking could keep the mirrors beamed at mini "power towers" 6 or 8 ft high which would contain solar panels and solar hot water and hot air systems. http://www.youtube.com/user/gaiatechnician

I'm not sure if the following was been tried and available commercially.

In automobiles the exhaust carries huge energy. Absorption refrigeration cycle needs heat as primary energy source.

By this combination, one can get free cooling effect from exhaust. Even if this was tried, worth improving since it is high time for any attempt towards optimising the availability of fuel.

Compressed air has been (is being) seriously investigated as an alternative to batteries for energy storage for zero emission vehicles. Carbon fiber tanks that can be pressurised to over 300 atmospheres is the key to this technology. But how do you use 300 bar air efficiently to turn a shaft ? If that is not challenging what is ?

Close to that, some different,i awaited for years a cars brake system that when you want to stop the wheels acts an air compressor which loads air compressed tanks with differents pressures each one.Even more, each one inside another,so the the pressure differences become smaller.Even more, the compression could be adiabatic to don't loss energy (thermal isolation each of the multiple bottles tank);A main valve what decides when feed back the engine...You could stop your vehicle,a subway for example, and do it start again with the energy stored.

Regenerative braking can be used on a compressed air driven vehicle of course. However putting a series of tanks one into another like those Russian dolls will solve the stress problem, but then the energy density is much lower than a high strength carbon fiber tank.

May be three or four differents pressures bottles will help to avoid gears boxes? Is this system feasible more in big transports with known stoppings and times or better in smaller like motorized bicyclets? Is never possible a properly size? mechanics constuction and maintanance costs are higher than energy saved?

For non conventional energy you may consider cheaper version of small wind mills for pumping the water for agricultural pumps or for genrating electric power for small homes.

You can also consider mini Hydro elctric projects based on small springs. Suresh Sharma.

Hi,

A. it is much better and adapted to modern industrial development and research to have or build a team that is concentrating on a topic, since 50 years no single student is able to really be advanced with projects. So join an existing team and share a little bit of an important research project.

B. What I am thinking about is an adjustment screw (M20) that is able to exert big forces to elastically deform machine structures and at the same time adjustable without difficulty to 0.1µm.

C. Longterm wanted solutions that do not exist:

C1: micro-hydraulics (3mm dia rotary pumps, 1200bar; cylinders 1mm dia, 20mm long; valves any type) suitable to be operated with water, oil, salt-water.

C2: artificial muscles and their optimum attachment to artificial sinew and artificial bones (may be metallic, ceramic or plastic)

C3: small air-wings for artificial flies, bees, size up to dragonflies and hummingbirds (see DARPA what they fund)

C4: energy efficient propulsion for boats based on fish propulsion principles (robo-tuna)

C5: ultrahigh-speed rotation

C6: very many solutions waiting in medical devices technology

D: comments to above suggestions: best in my thinking is energy from cars exhaust to fuel refrigerations, fuel mixtures are no longer of interest, most wind and solar questions solved.

Hi,

The use of LPG with petrol is effective in the world but not with the diesel.

I tried in using the LPG with a diesel mixture in a slow speed diesel engine.

As the % of LPG proceeds up, the speed of the engine came down. However, the project was success and you can try with some other fuels..

Recently, You might got a news from Japan that they found a car running water as a fuel. You could also try with some alternate materials..

Alternate fuel is a vast area where you can find lot many ideas towards worlds use..

All the Best,

K.Parthasarathy

i am waiting for a methane fuel cell to become available. then i could hook it up to a methane digester and get electricity. when that happens, i can be even more independent from the grid.

i also like the exhaust to refrigeration idea. would also work for a freezer. could it replace air conditioning? isn't that a significant mileage vampire?

A ceramic engine ( around 1300 cc) that uses on board hydrogen generator........In a light weight reinforced carbon fiber body. No frills, no carpet, no 12 speaker sound system, 6 speed manual transmission, just good ole, high mileage, roadster???????

I am a believer in Hydrogen as an alternative, and a the pooh, pooher's will not convenience me other wise. I would be willing to bet the folks that are so dead against on board hydrogen, believe in Global Warming, and that we do not need to drill in Anwar or any other place in our country that has oil. There will always be a need for oil. It just doesn't have to be in our daily driver autos. To many good working experimenters out there with working machines. I will have one soon my self.

I cant do the ceramic engine, 6 speed trans, or the carbon fibre. But, I can handle a standard ic at 12 or 1300cc with hydrogen generator.

You didn't say it had to be easy or not controversial !!!! Be interesting to see all the debunker's of this idea.

Somebody's got to do it, may as well be you!
