06/17/2008 5:18 PM

stainless steel welded wire mesh1/4 " .032 I am making boxes 3"x3"x12" with a mesh bottom and a hinged mesh top and I want to make many, fast . I am wrapping wire around the joint to secure bottom and side but much to slow I need to know how to weld these fast with some type of resistance weld but the wire is thin,or some other way like crimps but I haven't found any that will work hog rings are to big and whatever it is has to be able to stand high temperatures . . Any suggestions . Thank you

Check out http://www.key-to-steel.com/Articles/Art76.htm for a weld process that might work for you. You might look into brazing.

Good luck

.032 wire is not thin for resistance welding. We commonly resistance weld wire .001" diameter and less. The crossed wire (90 deg. configiration) is most reliable. It helps if the wire is 300 series stainless, clean, and annealed. You can use a capacitor discharge welder (about 100 joules) or an AC welder (about 2-5 kva). Feel free to contact us if you need more details, or would like us to supply a welder or sample welds.

We have MUCH better luck with capacitor discharge on small stuff like that.

We are also looking for a way to resistance weld stainless steel braid to stiffen it for an assembly process.

Do you have a company url?

Thanks,

Al

How strong does it have to be?

Would a hot melt glue be strong enough?

What about self tapping screws?

How about small rods to form a frame with an cut in it that can be quickly bend over to lock the wire in place. Then weld them if needed. Small plastic rods could be ordered with some type of locking mechienism on thier sides.

I would look at the possibility of using silver solder. In my experience, however, some silver solder products adhere well to stainless steel, others adhere poorly.

The best process would be resistance spotwelding. Nothing will be faster or more economical. If you have a small spotwelder with multiple impulse try using 2 impulses-also try using a class 3 material for your tips it will sasve time by reducing frequent tip dressing & provide more consistant welds. My company is a welding job shop specializing in spotwelding . good luck ----If you need assistance swsmike123@aol.com. Mike
