Noticed BBC WorldService radio and BBC World TV channels are promoting "BBC.com" instead of "bbc.co.uk" (URL they've been promoting for years), and am wondering if there is a story behind this, or is it as simple as wanting to save their global listening/viewing audience a few keystokes when bringing up BBC content in their web browsers?
Is there a general internet trend to move away from the ISO-assigned, country-specific domains? What does this mean for all the folks who've been linking to the old root-level domain ending with ".co.uk"?
I think BBC's current financing plan is to get their non-UK audience to fund the BBC's intra-UK programming, and maybe this is part of that plan?
Looking forward to reading what others might know about this.
