how can be current measured of a stepper motor?

06/20/2008 10:25 AM

I am having a problem in a Gear Shaving machine(HURTH), after every 4-5 cycles there was a warning of infeed position not reached. and after 15-20 minutes the m/c use to work efficiently.I checked for all the possible conditions but I did not reach to any conclusion. When there was warning of infeed position not reached except vertical feed all the axes could be moved. So I checked the vertical axis stepper motor(brake),it was very hot,I want to know that how can be current measured of a stepper motor?

1) What kind of motor drive are you using?

2) Do you mean the motor was getting very hot, or the brake?

3) This message, "infeed position not reached except vertical," implies that only the vertical feed was in position. If this is what the message actually said, then there's no need to worry about the vertical axis.

Please post again, and try to explain the situation a bit more clearly. Take your time. There are people here happy to help, if they can understand your problem.

Best regards,

John

actually I want to say that the vertical axis with stepper motor & drive was not reaching to its home position. and the motor was getting very hot.

just I want to know is how can I measure the current of a stepper motor.

The way to measure the current depends on your answer to my first question - what kind of motor drive are you using? Can you give us a manufacturer & part number? If it's a "home-brew" drive, can you post a circuit diagram?

There may be an easy way (with a DVM, AVO or similar), or you may need to get fancy with series resistor(s) and a 'scope.

Please elaborate.

Regards, John.

You have to insert a small (0.2-0.5 Ω) resistor serially with the motor and you can use an oscilloscope ( If you have a digital storage type one it's really simple to do)

Can you be more brief about how Can the resistance be connected serially when the stepper motor is of three phase.

How to use oscilloscope afterwards(connecting resistance serially)?

Or better still use a current probe on your oscilloscope.

You don't need to insert resistors or even break the wires then...
