electric car motor

06/21/2008 11:02 PM

the motor to power a car - does it or should it be built from the start to do the job of powering a car. If it is to be custom built - is there one or many ideas of how it is to be wound and the controller custom built and the recharge circuit - speed pot -- ect. Thanks George Dibble

You have several directions you can decide to venture..

DC motor, Single Phase Electric Motor, Poly Phase Electric Motor (multiple phases)

Direct Drive or Gearbox/Diff

Motors mounted inboard or on the wheels (I'd advise against this)

Drive train linkages, Universal Joints, CV joints, CV's get lossy if you have them deflecting off centre, the greater the deflection, the greater the losses.

Battery Packs, Lead Acid, Deep cycle, AGM (Gel)

Total combined battery weight, and the suspension systems to support that mass.

Ventillation of the Hydrogen/Oxygen from the cells during recharging (all batteries do GAS)

Also, how much do you want to spend?

The speed pot isn't really a problem, several manufacturers run a "Fly by Wire" throttle control where you have a pot mounted on the Accel pedal and a servo motor on the throttle body.

Recharging circuit comes down to cell organisation, ie all cells in series parallel to make 12VDC, 24, 48, 96.... whatever and the suitable charger to charge those cells, boost charging and float charging (1.15V Float x Batrtery Voltage, 1.2V Boost x Battery Voltage)

I think the most interesting thing about all this activity is that it is in reach of the common guy in his garage..

It will be intersting to watch how large auto makers react to this politically thru legislative agenda and with respect to product engineering. The implications to the standard traditional economic model could be quite large.

I'm already there with someone ;o)

Yes, you start of with a little "Noddy-car" small, 3cyl job, but it has the chassis, wheels, bearings, steering and all the stuff needed for road worthy cert, rip out the engine, cooling, fuel systems, and replace with your new stuff.

And.. doesn't take up much garage space...

The wheel has been invented - wherever possible use off-the-shelf.
