CR4 Links Do Not Open Anymore

06/25/2008 7:38 AM

Hi I have this problem, my CR4 mail comes regularly, but when i click on a link , nothing happens, this has started happening only after i removed "mozilla "that i installed and than had to remove because it was kind of appropriating all down loads that i have had prior to mozilla download.resulting in many files not opening;

i blame mozilla , could it be the case that unknowingly i have blocked it ?

any suggestions !

thanks.

It sounds like your preferred browser (IE?) is not longer set as the default browser, or maybe your email program isn't aware of which browser you want to use. How to fix this depends a lot on what email program you use and which browser you want to be your default.

Thanks
- Mark

Are you, perhaps, using Outlook or Outlook Express?

I do 90% of my web work on Firefox. I only use IE6 for governmental sites and schools, which absolutely require it.

Thanks Orpheuse

I use outlook express, IE 6.

My problem with firefox arose when ( though it was never my defauilt browser) it kind of took over control resulting in many links (downloaded earlier) failing to open ; associating photpshop to the item I am trying to open and photoshop telling it could not open because of ------ I honestly dont recollect.

thanks

I don't think your problem is with Firefox directly. I think it's with Outlook Express. I became wary of Outlook Express in Windows 95. There was something about it that made me wary and I've never used it since.

Yeah, your 'symptoms' mirror the ones I received from my Users in 95. Back then, Yahoo was in it's infancy, so most of us were on Mindspring as browser and e-mail handler.

I switched to Firefox about two years ago when Microsoft was trying to cram IE7 down my throat. Wrote a short letter telling them I didn't like it and switched to Firefox. Been there ever since.

If you can dump Outlook and use either IE6 or Firefox you will be a much happier camper. Having never used it I don't know how to disable it. I also don't know how to move the Outlook contact file into Firefox, but someone on this site does.

Your next irritant, unless you have a legal version of MSOffice is right here. Go to www.openoffice.org just click the link - but before you do, choose one or several people on this board and give them a point. It's a complete office solution that works a lot like MSOffice, but it's totally free and completely compatible with MSOffice. You can share documents on both platforms and Open Office doesn't crash, or garble your text, etc.

Hey, Del? There's a good kitty. I got your favorite, catnip and beer. Please point this youngin' to un-installing Outlook Express and transferring his contact list to Yahoo, he seems to be in the Microsoft grinder and he doesn't look happy. Thanks, again, Del.

Hello Orpheuse,

I truly do not understand your aversion to IE7, it does all that FireFox will and more and is more forgiving or blind too

Back about a year ago they found that IE7 had more bugs than a termite nest. They also found a goodly number of virus vulnerabilities. The main reason, though, is that I hate monopolies, especially from Microsoft.

Given the fact that 85% of new users end up with Microsoft in some form or another, either because it came with the system or out of ignorance, I don't feel that Microsoft takes it's obligation to the public seriously enough, preferring, instead, to produce bells and whistles instead of producing really good software at an affordable price.

Another thing about the House that Gates built is the fact that even a small reference guide costs $45.00usd. I can download the entire guide to Open Office, and all the software, free. Granted, there is a learning curve, but try learning to maintain a Microsoft server as opposed to any distro of Linux. Be prepared to spend at least $100.00 to $200.00usd. They also have a writing style that is deliberately confusing. Their website is no better and a good deal worse.

That's enough of that rant. Sorry you got bogged down in Firefox but you do have to read the documentation, which actually is correct, and up to date.

Hi. After you uninstalled Mozilla (which obviously became your default browser replacing IE), your system no longer has a browser to use. To correct this, just open MSIE, and it will inform you that it is not the default browser, and asks if would you'd like it to be your default browser. Answer "yes" to this, and everything should be back to normal when you click on any link in any html eMail.

Otherwise, restart.

Another shortcut to the whole process is to right-click on the CR4 link, select "copy link location", open IE, paste the URL, press Enter. IE will do the same thing I described above, plus, it will take you directly to the CR4 you want to see.

One more thing. Your registry is probably messed up, too. Use a registry cleaner to remove all dead links to your system, and speed up boot times. I'm using CCleaner, a free app, which, IMHO does a wonderful job. This cleaner works in Vista, too.

Just as a footnote, you can force Windows to use your preferred browser, mail programme or media player by going to:- 'Start', 'Control Panel', 'Add/Remove Programmes' then, in the left hand side select 'Set Programme Access & Defaults'. If you select 'Custom' & expand it you can pick the default browser, e-mail & media player.
