Software solutions

06/27/2008 9:34 PM

I am a retired electrical engineer. During service I did not have opportunity to use softwares in electrical engineering. I am now freelance consultant in electrical engineering. I am still carrying out calculations and designs manually. I am desirous to acquire some (free) softwares and use them for my assignments.

Request help and guidance in the matter. Also wish to know which are the specific applications / areas where software solutions are used in electrical engineering.Thanks.

A couple of places to try (unfortunately, not free.):

www.engineersedge.com

www.ieee.com (you probably already know about this)

www.comsol.com (definitely not free- very high-end multiphysics simulation

software for math simulation of real world phenomena)

www.mathcad.com (cheaper, with built-in equations)

of course, you could also google any number of words and phrases that are related

Good luck.

For designing (diagrams and layouts) I use TinyCad (http://tinycad.sourceforge.net/)

It's easy, and with a little imagination you can use it for designing almost everything ...

Try this: http://www.freebyte.com/electronics/

You were not too specific as to the sort of problems you are addressing. Pure mathematics, try SciLab, which is an open source answer to MatLab and its ilk.

There are any number of oppensource SPICE options out there (actually, SPICE itself is open source- it's the fancy GUI's that are proprietary).

If you were more specific about the software tools you are looking for, perhaps we could be of more assistance...

Thanks very much for the very useful information.

As rightly pointed out by you,I should have mentioned specific application.

I am looking for available software options to carry out electrical network analysis, design and detailed engineering for electrical power systems in a petroleum refinery for various operating conditions.

This includes load flow calculations, short circuit studies, sizing of electrical equipment etc.

You might want to have a look at ATP-EMPT, originally developed by EPRI in the US, now open source. I do not have a link available right now, but you can google this to find the web site.
