Yield for Square Tubing

I oversee a machinery repair facility for a major drilling contractor in Mexico, recently someone from "operations" felt he was doing us a favor by purchasing a Travelift to move large components around the yard. First and foremost the Travelift is a Boat Lift not intended for this job. I have devised a modification that will work, basically spreader bars. However I am not sure as to the sufficient size and wall thickness of the square tubing to be used for this. The span is 25' and maximum load is to be 20,000 lb.

You need to provide MUCH more detail. To begin with, define "large components". A diagram or photo of the lift and the load will help immensely.

to answer your specific question as to the yield of square tubing you did not specify the type of tubing you are asking about, ASTM A500 grade a yeild is 39ksi, Grade B is 46 Ksi Grade C is 50KSI. ASTM A501 is 36KSI.

The standard safety factor for lifting equipment is 5x the WLL because of the risk to workers if the equipment were to fail. Additionally most designers assume an N+1 design strategy where essentially the load should be sufficiently supported even if one of the lifting suports fails.

One other point. If you are not an engineer qualified and licensed to design such equipment (and judging by your question, I suspect that is the case), you will be placing your workers in danger and you will be making yourself liable for lawsuits if the equipment fails. I would strongly encourage you to cease and desist and obtain the services of a qualified and licensed engineer, the life you save might just be your own.
