Running Headline: Big Changes Coming to CR4

09/13/2006 12:11 PM

In the early evening of Wednesday, September 13th (EST), we will turn off the existing CR4 and release our new platform. The new platform, which we have built from the ground up over the last 9 months, is a radical improvement over the existing site. We've updated the graphics, improved the site performance, and have added a lot of tools to make your CR4 experience better. The new site has a WYSIWYG editor for posting (no more HTML coding), will allow for image insertion, has tools for tagging and private messaging, will allow for better tracking of stories, will give blogs (previously journals) a higher profile and much, much more. We do not expect any significant downtime when the transition takes place.

We look forward to seeing you in the new CR4!

Sincerely,
Chris Leonard and the CR4 Admin Team

Believe me, spell checking is on my to-do list! In the mean time, you should check out the Google toolbar and its Spell Check feature... very nice.

New CR4

This should make an excellent forum even better! In the long run, maybe even a bit of TEX for formulas?

Hi
We've been looking at different options for entering and displaying formulas. We'll be in touch when we have something more concrete to talk about.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Chris, mgaulin, One possible issue with negative consequences is that some of our journal entries found their way to near the top of Google search results pages. Will such links now be broken?

An example: http://cr4.globalspec.com/~Jorrie/journal/ today comes up third third in a Google of: relativity+engineer.

Is there a plan to redirect these links in any way? (Google takes a dim view of broken links!)

Hi Jorrie
Yes, the old urls for cr4 will map to proper urls on the new site as much as possible, including journals (if they are converted to real blogs, as yours will be). We like our search engine rankings as much as you do!

Hey guys, thanks for good words. We've still got some kinks to work out of the WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) editor, but we're working on it.

Well, the folks here in the office doing the site upgrade are about to head home and try it out from there. (Thanks Tony, Rob, and Ron!)

Abbreviated Daily Digest

09/14/2006 7:27 AM

I really like the new looks for the site, however, I miss being able to read the entire entry in the daily digest without having to click a link. Is it possible to change the daily digest to include the entire initial entry like it used to?

Chris and team,

I like the new format. I know you have worked hard and it shows.

Thanks,
