I've been in the instrumentation field for 23 years. Most of my knowledge came from working for an instrumentation contractor.

I used to be a radio/television technician so working in instrumentation was new for me. Since our work involved different processes, industries and client preferences, I learned a lot of different things. They also sent me to training classes (their expense).

Alternatively, you can take charge of your own training and enrol in short courses on your own ticket. Some companies require you to stay with them for two to five years after a company sponsored training. If you pay for your own training, you can go anytime you want to.

Lastly, even if you don't transfer to an instrumentation contractor, you can learn lots of things in your daily job with your present employer. You're still new (just three years old, experience-wise) so don't despair about learning things. They'll come by themselves.

If you just focus on continuous improvement of the equipment processes and methods that are under your responsibility, and actually make improvements, you will have a great career.

Ask yourself :

Why is this here?

Can it be done better?

How can I make this more ____ with what I have available?

Executing responsible answers to those three questions as well as satisfactorily completing assigned work will make you the go to guy in your organization. Your career will be the envy of all others who wait to be told what to work on.

You might consider some classes on the English language. No, I am not being a smart ass. The internet seems to have settled on English.
