Does anyone know the specific use and function of this Rack Mount Type Hipot Fun

07/05/2008 12:08 PM

I purchased a "lot" of electronic equipment and have been stumped on identifying one piece of equipment that was included in lot. Looking for information on an Enclosed Rack Mount Type AC311560008 Power Supply Hipot Functest Runin Unit? The specific use and function of this unit item is uncertain. It is possibly some sort of testing or power supply unit. There is no model number or further information provided for this particular item. The brand name of this item is uncertain, but it appears to be of good quality. This 17-1/2" x 15-1/4" x 7" unit has (2) 18v Cooling fans and inside is loaded with large and small DC power type Capacitors, Resistors, Heat Sinks, Inductors, ect…. Case is metal and has multiple pin type connectors with ID numbers and 4 led status lights that say AC I, AC 0, and DC. I would guess that stands for AC in, AC out, and DC. There are some bar code labels that say: 311560008, 128031, and LCUD0401000262

Some other labels say: HIPOT, FUNCTEST, RUN IN, FNCT 2, FQA137 and ISP

It has adjustment type screws that say: F1, F2, and F3 and a small 4 pin connector. I have tried finding information on the internet with no success.

You may know what this unit was built for from the pictures and information I've given. Entire unit and parts look to be new. If you know what this unit was designed for please let me know.

It seems very similar to a UPS or an inverter. The size indicates a use on bigger than computer.

HIPOT, FUNCTEST, RUN IN, FNCT 2, FQA137 and ISP

These are internal checks that have been done to the supply by the manufacturer.

You'll possibly find that there is a AC power input and output, battery supply, from the LED info, I'd say as poster above said, a UPS

Have you opened the unit up? sometimes, there is identification on the main PCB, usually of the PCB part number, the manufacturer of the PCB would be useless, unless they are still around, and are willing to give that info, the UL94 is just a "Standards" marking.

Sorry I cannot be any help, but it just seems to be a UPS, strange how the box looks unfinished, no nice powder coating, or informational displays on the front, or a manufacturer logo's.

Hope it doens't scratch your disk, it'd be 1 heavy little beastie.

I have opened it up. Below are some pictures of the inside. I cannot find any markings inside defining what it is or even manufacture labels on components. I believe the two plugs on the side may be the AC power input. There is no battery pack so I don't see it being a UPS unit or battery supply. I'm thinking maybe a power converter of sort. Maybe just a good source of scrap copper, transformers, capacitors, and aluminum heat sinks. As you can see its loaded with them. Transformers for the fans are 18v. No other markings anywhere giving information. Maybe some government or medical gadget?

That could be arranged. meidemiller@msn.com I like to see it get see it used productively rather than scrap. I hate destroying someone else's hard labor.

Hi

I think, that is the description of a hipot= high potential .Probably it was used for testing while isolating the circuit. The best site for more information is CE compliance Engineering.

Hipot is the term used for electrical isolation and compliance testing of electronics devices, specifically those that are operated from Mains voltages, and users interaction.

You run the HIPOT for say about an hour at 1500V and measure the leakage is below a certain threshold.

I have a couple of HIPOT testers here.

The detail on your device that said about HIPOT just means it passed that QA check at the end of production, generally there will be a coloured stamp on the HIPOT box, meaning "Checked"

It looks like there are at least 4 switch mode power supplies in there. Probably a power supply for a large server network.

Hi TechMarineDude,

A hi-potter is used to test the power line for breakdown voltage. This is a safety test for manufacturers of electronic equipment. Normally they have a current meter to show the condition of the unit under test. This seems to be a special purpose unit, and may not even be a hi-potter. It's only good for parts unless you can identify power supplies that can be used.

I would say your comment that it is only good for parts is where this mission is headed since identifing its' intention is looking glum. Thanks for the imput.
