Corel's Paint Shop Pro Photo XI and RAW image files from a Nikon D40X SLR...

07/12/2008 12:41 AM

Paint Shop Pro Photo XI (historically a great product, both before Corel bought it from Jasc Software and afterwards) chokes on loading a RAW image file with a .NEF extension taken by a Nikon D40X SLR digital (an awesome camera). It reports that it can not recognize the file type. I have the latest update from Corel. Anyone have any thoughts?

I have Corel PSP XI as well. I hav not come across the problem you have, however, a quick search using .nef as term produced a few good web pages.

http://www.outbackphoto.com/workshop/NEF_conversion/nefconversion.html

http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/

Since I don't have a Nikon camera, I personally haven't had the conversion problem.

I have worked with other file types, and Corel didn't seem to have a problem with any of them.

Good Luck!

Hi Charlie...

Thanks for the response.

I could not sleep, so I got up around 3:30 AM and did some reading. According to Corel, XI won't work with the RAW image format generated by the D40X. I need X2 for that ability. I bought an upgrade to X2 from XI, not bad only $50.00. I'll let you know if it works!

The X2 version works, as promised, with the RAW image file format generated by the D40X. The detail in the images is astounding.

I have a D40X also, but use Photoshop for editing. It is an impressive camera when you consider that I got it with 18-55 and 55-200 mm (VR) lenses for less than the price of a D200 body alone. I've made 16x20 enlargements and they show no sign of pixillation.
