Can`t find a Miller Big 50 CV2 board

07/13/2008 9:13 AM

I have many diesel welders 350 amp and up. The big 50 I bought new in 1985/6 did not have any bells and whistles. So I ordered everything that could be field installed from meters to Engin shut down protection and constent voltage. This is my smallest welder and the one I use the most because it is so much easyier to move around.About 15 years ago on rainy days the CV would not work so I would run CC and after it ran for an hour or so the CV would work. It has gotten worse over the years and quite last year. I did all of the voltage testing on it with my cell phone to millers diesel drive and me and my trustey VOM. It is either the board or the plug so as a last ditch effort to cure it I brought the board in the house and warmed it up then covered it with clear silicon on both sides hoping it would keep out any moisture. I screwed it back in place and attached the plug. I started it up and only had CC. By the way it is not one of the three toggle switches right over it. Winter was on me so I went to FL. and forgot about my problem. I just returned and started it up and it was working fine, I shut it down and restarted several times and it worked fine.I was a happy as one could be. I started it the next day and it only makes CC, I am at my wits end. Miller wants wayyy too much money for a board that only cost them $20 tops to build and if I buy it and it still does this I own the circuit board as soon as I open the bag.I know there are several places I can send the board out to be repaired but that was before I put the silicon on. Does any one know where there is a dead big 50 or 40 made between 1985 & 1988 that had a CV2 on it. The miller part # is123375 and every time I call them they up the price. I have bought five large millers in my lifetime and now that I am crippled up with out a big income I don`t seem to count any more. I would be careful if you are looking for a new machine on how hard parts are to get if you plan on keeping it for a long time. Thanks for listening and I hope to here back from someone with a answer.

That is the best price I have found so far. but the fact that they will stand behind the board for two years is unheard of. I will send all my bad circuit boards to then in the future if they pull it off.

I called others and the best was a one year warrenty from ( plccenter.com) for $128.50.

Weldmart.com for $295.00 no warranty

Industrial electronics company ,Applied Industrial, ETC.

To answer some of the other replies who do not Get it let me explain. When you go to a supply house to buy large welders, in my case the largest made by Lincoln and Miller at that time. The supply houses usually just have the least expensive plain Jane Models on the floor. If you need it right then you have to take what you can find. In the case of the machine we are talking about it came with a polarity switch that offered AC besides DC- and DC+, small AC 120 and 140 output. However it was able to be turned into CV machine. So as the parts came in the supply house tech and I put them on after the end of the day. By the way miller wanted $468.98 when I called, the next week the same board was $526. I will not say whats on my mind when I have bought a AirPak, 55D trailblazer, Big Blue 400, Big 40 and the Big 50 in question.Never mind all of the squirt boxes and other plug in machines. Again thanks I will take it off and send it out in the AM. Thanks.

Am I reading this correctly? You ordered the CV and field installed it? Why suspect the board at all? And not the field installed CV?

I think CC = constant current and CV = constant voltage, both of which would cost very little to implement as standard items. Looks like Miller loves billable options with huge margins

I will look around here and see if I can find you one. I have some buddies that may have a few of the millers from that time period. I wonder if there is a similar part on a electric CV welder? My main shop welder is a Miller shopmaster 300 and it has cc and CV capabilities. It was a machine Miller made back in the mid 90's to cover all types of welding with one machine. They don't make them any more I think. I have had it for 13 years and it never missed a lick. It would have to have a somewhat similar part I would think. I still have my old Lincoln SA 200 pipe liner from 1984 with the Continental 4 cylinder gas engine. I don't use it much anymore but can't seem to part with it either.

Thanks much,, but the only part that will work is from that vintage. The good news is that it is now repaired. I was talking to the local miller certified repair man and it was in the plug. I took a dental pick and pushed in on each wire one at a time. On the plug on one side you can see metal and if you push on it and pull the wire at the same time it will come out of the plug. Then I spread the keeper and pushed it back in until it snapped in. I did them all and now it works fine. If any one in the future wants to take one apart I can not stress how much care must be used. I have in miller a airpak, the big 50 we have been talking about, a big blue 400. I had a 55D trailblazer but sold it. Lincoln I have a SAM 650 and had a SAM 400 that burnt down. That is just some of the diesels. So this is not my first time falling off of the welding supply truck. I am glad there are so many other Americans out there ready to lend a hand. I thank you all. Welderboy
