The China Price

05/11/2005 10:10 AM

Late last year, Business Week ran a story about "the three scariest words in U.S. industry". The story, called the "The China Price", describes what Business Week calls "a massive shift in economic power" from the United States to China because of the latter's ability to produce low cost goods. Moreover, while the ranks of U.S. engineers is "thinning", China is building an "army of engineers that is growing by 350,000 annually".

Outnumbered

The really scary part of the report was where they said they can hire 5-10 engineers in china for 1 Silicon Valley engineer. Here are some numbers for Electronic Engineers.

A survey of nearly 2,300 electronic engineers in China found that those with doctorates were earning an average of $10,685 this year, 12 percent more than in 2003, Global Sources Ltd., publisher of the magazine Electronic Engineering Times China, said. Engineers with master's degrees were earning $9,853 a year, or 6 percent more than last year; and those with bachelor's degrees were earning $7,104 a year, or 8 percent more.

Combine that with the fact that they are producing 700,000 engineers a year and it's a nasty looking tidal wave.
