Looking for flexible, wear-resistant material

07/16/2008 3:33 PM

I'm looking for a material that is both flexible and provides good wear resistance for manufacturing production line operations to prevent machine wear from sliding product. Product would preferably be in sheet form (4ft x 8ft), 1/8" to 1/2" thick to cut various shapes and sizes. The environment is very abrasive (fine silica). Material should be flexible enough to wrap around a 6" radius corners. We are using a material right now (in USA) that only lasts a week. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is the type of application urethanes were specifically designed for. Urethanes actually cut their teeth as slurry pump liners in the mining industry out-lasting ni-hard steel 10:1 and natural rubbers 5:1. Look into a high-performance polyester from either BASF or Bayer with extremely high rebound and low cut-propagation characteristics.

Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW) used often for conveyors and other production machinery. Depending on chemical exposure, could also consider acetal (POM) or nylon. These are the best wear & friction materials out there.

Google "Nolu Plastics" They can tell you what to use for your application. I use them for high speed conveying--easier to replace the plastic than the steel bed. Good luck!

Unless heat is produced, I have found that Nylatron works miracles of a simireligious nature.
