Crude Glycerol in Hydrogen Steam Reforming

07/24/2008 6:30 AM

i'm a chemical engineering final year student, currently i'm doing a design project regarding to converting glycerol (C3H8O3) into hydrogen (H2).

may i know that is that possible to use crude glycerol (abt 80% purity) in the process? if can not, may i know what is the minimum purity needed?

TQ

Why has phoenixs comment been marked off-topic? Strange...

What catalyst are you using for the operation? And on which support is the catalyst being supported? The efficiency of a catalyst can drop drastically if contaminated.CVheck out the contaminants in your glycerol and their compatability with your catalyst.Precious metal catalysts must be the maximum cost of your project, don't let it go waste.

Try altering your steam temperature/steam to catalyst ratios etc, might work.

most probably is Nickel on alumina support... all the process is quite similar with normal steam methane reforming... and the composition is like this, Neutralised Crude Glycerine Glycerine Content: 80% min Water: 10% max Mong: 10% max Soap: 8% max Salt: 8% max Methanol: 5% max Ash: 8% max PH: 6-8%

With the high level of contaminants you provided (soap, etc.) any catalyst will quickly deactivate. Partial oxidation in an entrained gassifier will work.
