CA 160

07/24/2008 3:19 PM

I recently purchased what i was told was a 1966 Honda CA 160 Touring bike. When the previous owner found the title it says the bike is a 1970. Does anyone know how i can find out if the bike is a 66 or 70? I was told by a person at Honda that it was 66 but the title says otherwise.

Presumably the 'title' is when it was first registered or sold? Whereas you are interested in when it was manufactured....so I'd believe the person at Honda.
Things are probably different in UK and US so I may be talking rubbish.

"...I may be talking rubbish..."

How true - and what do things being different in the UK and US have to do with THIS?

I'd seriously check all the numbers on the frame and motor to see if they even match with the title. They may have swapped parts or even have the wrong title. The title should say make/year/model. It shouldn't matter what year it was bought or sold in. It's when it was manufactured.

Then again the people at Motor Vehicles may have screwed up. I had a title transfer to my son and didn't check what milage they entered. Later on when we checked the title it read 345,000 miles. The bike should be in the Guiness Book of records.

I was told nothing could be done since I didn't verify the info before I left the agency.

Sad, but true story here in PA about DMV idiocy. A good friend bought a Dutchman 5th wheel camper 3 years ago in Louisiana where he was working and tried to title it in PA. Title actually came back as a 1937 Terraplane. He had to re-register it in LA to rectify as PA DMV could never straighten it out after several months and dollars.

Good Lord! He should have left well enough alone - d'you have any idea what a '37 Terraplane is worth?

Believe me we discussed it, but the only bidder opted for the Brooklyn Bridge and Newark Airport.

The date on the title should be the manufacturing date. The only way that I know that it could be changed is if the vehicle was reconstructed from parts from different vehicles and there was no title. Then the date would be the year the vehicle was issued a title. The frame and engine would have serial numbers. From them you should be able to look up a date.

On a Honda, the ID plate is located on the front frame just above the yoke, and is partially hidden by the gas tank. I has the year of manufacture in big bold letters.

with all due respect to the previous posters, the date of manufacture DOES NOT indicate and is not necessarily the model year of the machine. walk into any motorcycle dealership and you'll find 2008 models that have 2007 dates of manufacture. It's the same as with cars, your 2008 family truxter was probably manufactured at some point in 2007.

Another thing you'll need to consider is that serial numbers werent very uniforrn, and some bikes just plain didn't have them. I have a friend who worked "inside" honda for several years and has forgotten more than most people know when it comes to bikes, especially Hondas. joel@powersportseast.com send him an email, he's always happy to help...

I can see and underwstand your point for a single year difference, but we are talking about a FOUR YEAR DIFFERENCE, so I personally feel that the date on the plate will describe the model year fairly closely......within 12 months so to say and that should be good enough to help the original poster.....

Thank you to everyone who has helped me in my search. I am still yet to find the year off of any of the ideas that have been given to me. But again Thank you i will continue my search to discover what year my bike is.

If you don't find you're answer here, try this forum: http://www.hondabikes.net/forum/

I've used that site for info on restoring my 1978 CB400. They are all Honda nuts and you'll find people who can answer any conceivable question regarding your bike. However, I want to guess you're title is wrong since titles didn't exist back then and most states still don't require a '66 to be titled. I'm assuming you're in the US?
