Trackballs

Does anyone know anything about trackballs that communicate through pulses? I am looking to find information on what the electrical requirements/and or communication protocols. Thanks for any information.

Is it the same as those used for a mouse?

If so use a mouse driver.

Yeah I am pretty sure. I will have to look into that further. IT is for a gaming devices that runs off of windows so that could be possible. Right now we use usb trackballs.

Think of a trackball as a dead mouse, and you rub his tummy.

All you need are x and y axis motion measurement. This is a mature tech and single chip solutions are there for serial and USB. You choose the resolution you want based on pulse coders resolution you build.

You can do the same with laser technology, and there are trackballs out there that do this now. They will have a patterned trackball surface, finer patterns = finer motion.

best is to read the blurbs about the types. Laser trackballs internalize the laser light

Some of the chips used might be custom made for Logitech, Microsoft etc.
