Hydraulic Clutch Pedal Movement

The clutch on my recently purchased Citroen C3 (7000 miles) is hydraulic and engages only when the pedal is at the top its lengthy movement. Can an adjustment be made to enable the clutch to 'bite' much nearer the floor thus reducing the leg movement and enabling a quicker gear change?

While I don't know this specific car, usually this is either a bad/worn clutch or air in the hydraulic system. Given only 7,000 miles on the car I would think you need to rebleed the system.

Start with that, since it is the cheapest alternative and then go from there is that doesn't work.

I have worked with different types clutches and there are two spots that mechanical adjustments can be made in the linkage--At the pedal lever where it engages the hydraulic piston and where there slave cylinder transfers movement to the arm that engages the clutch--There should be a range of adjustment there, but I would guess that it would be mechanical only. The hydraulic systems for these are very simple, but I don't imagine this will be an easy task on such a small car--If it was my car I would pay to have it done by a mechanic.

Dick,

I don't think air would be your problem as that would cause you more problems dis-engaging than engaging.

What I'm wondering about is why, on a car with only 7000 miles on it, you haven't let the dealer have a go at it. It should still be under warranty.

Another thing to consider is finding another similar car and checking how it's clutch works to make sure you actually have a problem. It's possible the car was designed that way. The French do things different sometimes.

If there is an adjustment reason tells me it would have to be either at the pedal, at the slave cylinder where it ataches to the bell housing or on the push rod.

I hope this helps but I really would suggest a trip to the dealer.

Hello Dick Allison

As advised above, with 7,000 (Original??) miles on the clock, it is the Citroen Agent's responsibility.

They do the work free to you, and recover their costs from the Factory via the importer.

That's how the job is done, no worries for you.

Book it in to the Agents now, and don't fix it yourself, because if an unapproved mechanic does the work, then the Warranty is invalidated.

And in case none of the above work for you, like its a hot car and can't be taken to the dealer where-from it was stolen, buy the book, here in the States usually about twelve dollars, and it will give you all the information pertinent to that car and clutch.

On the hydraulics I have dealt with there not adjustable and as the clutch disk wears the engagement point moves higher in the petal stroke. New clutch engages/disengages near the floor, used near the top.

Now if this a new car take it back to the dealer and let them check it, and while your there check out a same model car a see if it's the same way.

If it's a used car the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder could have been changed and the wrong one installed. The size/stroke of either could cause an imbalance and the symptom your describing.
