Line Scan Cameras and Pixels

08/18/2008 9:26 PM

If a line scan camera has 4000 pixel and each pixel has 256 steps of gradations, then how many steps of gradations does a pixel have, when a "area scan chip" is used that has 4.2 megapixel?

A pixel is a little dot on the picture and usually arranged en rows and columns.

A picture area of 1000 x 1200 pixels will be classified as 1.2 megapixel.

The steps of graduation has to do with the memory required per pixel.

256 steps can be stored in one byte while 64k must be stored in a word (2 bytes).
