Need Long Interval Timer

08/19/2008 8:24 PM

My search of CR4 and Global Spec did not give a positive result. (what did I do wrong? - I thought Globalspec was omnicient)

One thread had a poster say they had seen a week duration timer in china but Globalspec failed to identify a brand name or manufacturer. Now what do I try? Tried Google as well

Using Globalspec only came up with the fact nothing was found and to try a custom manufacturer. For one piece only, that is not going to work. surely there is some manufacturer that makes a counter or timer that toggles once per week. Solar panel power (12V or 24V) can be provided. The timer has to toggle once per week and start a cattle watering pump. Pump is powered from the solar panel. Its remote and unattended.

Hello elnav

Perhaps you need to change the Search Terms.

Google Results 1 - 10 of about 22,100 for "7 day timer". (0.17 seconds)

Google Results 1 - 10 of about 589 for "programmable 7 day timer". (0.19 seconds)

There are plenty to choose from.

Plenty of makers make programmable timers which are second/minute/hour/day/week/day of the month/month/year, and many of these run on 24V DC, which is a common control circuit voltage for HVAC Control Panels.

Have a look at http://www.ia.omron.com/product/family/218/index_fea.html

<"....

H5F

Daily Time Control with Simple Operations (Operation Day Selection Possible)

  • Data Sheet (679KB)

Quick links OMRON IA Timers in your country.

Primary Contents

Up to 12 ON/OFF operations (24 for pulse-output operation).

Special holidays can be handled easily with the holiday setting function.

Adjustments for sudden schedule changes can be made easily using output override and automatic return operation.

The operation program can be checked easily with the program check function.

Enables pulse output operation and summertime setting.

Incorporates finger-safe terminals.

Conforms to UL, CSA, and CE marking.

Meets a variety of mounting requirements: flush mounting, surface mounting, and DIN track mounting.

....">

The Time Clock will switch on or off (Normally there are changeover contacts) and if you want the water pump to run for a fixed time, say 2 hours, at that weekly (programmable by user) switch-on time, a simple User-settable auxiliary timer can be fitted alongside the Time Clock, to run the pump at the weekly impulse, for the auxiliary timer duration.

If you say <"....a week duration timer....">, that is one which runs for a week, then switches on or off dependent on the settings and relays involved.

Just a thought re cattle: The ones we had on the farm needed water several times daily.

Kind Regards...

wow, I vote you for your passionate ,acquisitive material supply. its very detail, to be true, I cant search that. really goood. especially amusing pics.

another side, I think its not a difficult job to make such ling time timer with a chip like 2051 etc. diy.

just several wires connect and easy programming. add a relay can control any things as long as you hope.

even an electrician can make it. I think.

Well Mr. Guru,

I want you too know that "even an electrician can make it. I think" I very insulting in the rest of the world.

In addition you missed the entire point. The need here is for a "remote and durable" timer not a chip that will require programing.

I am sorry if these words are to strong for you but show some humility and respect.

No,no, you can speak any word to my thread. if you would like to discuss how to make a timer.

remote, you want? just entend the wire as long as you want. becaue the relay conrolled signal is DC.

if you hope wireless, its another thiings. you have to add a transmitter and recieeer,

can you explain me detail, what is it? I cnnt understand

Cultural difference here. You made as simple logic statement. But in our language to use the word "even" to refer to ability is same as saying "Even (a stupid) person can do it." We have a commercial here for on line car insurance "So easy, even a cave man can do it." Next time leave out the word "even". But someone may be offended anyway. Better not even to make comparison just say "It is easy to do." or "Anyone can do it."

I have used an Omron timer on one truck for 6 years. It has a selectable 1 through 999 number set, plus another set that allows :seconds, minuets, hours, or days. It might go to weeks or months, I don't remember. Mine is 12 volt powered. This should do what you need.

Back when I was teaching high school, there seemed to be plenty, more as the years progressed... That's why I retired at 55, and promptly got hired as an engineer. Still very satisfying, but LOTS lower stress than teaching.

Bob c do you happen to have that Omron part number available? All the long time duration times I found so far need AC power and a foot note says not to power them from an inverter. The only DC powered timer relayI have found so far is good for only a few hours. I'm still looking for a direct email address to send a query to OMRON. All the Tech Support leads to FAQ - none of which address my particular needs.

and the search continues ... .. . .. . ... ....

Re: Need long interval timer

As luck would have it I purchased a spare when I bought the first one. The box reads :

type H3CA-A

timer

time 99.9s to 9990h--------------( that is almost 2 months)

volts 24 to 240vac 12 to 240 vdc

lot no. 2070

I purchased mine from grainger. It has a grainger part # of 1A983. You will need an eleven pin socket to plug it into. The current catalog lists three sockets on page 312 and the relay on page 317. If I can help in any way please let me know. Good luck.

Yeah I know what you mean. To my surprise Grainger in Canada (Ackland-Grainger) doesn't carry the same inventory and stock as the US stores. But the guy was kind enough to refer me to someone else who did know someone who is a dealer and who does carry OMRON parts. I'm waiting for a call back to confirm they can order it in on the next mule train from the coast. <VBG>

That is where I started from; but the Ackland-Grainger ( Canadian version) doesn't have it. But Omron is handled in Canada by other distributors. I was using OMRON stuff back east when I was working closer to civilization. Trying to get anything like that cross the border can get a mite tetchy; if you know what I mean. Them border fellas and customs agents think anyone working with timers and stuff is trying to create an automatic ignition source for a highly reactive exothermic concoction. And some courier companies want mucho denaro for clearing a "duty free" shipment. Most companies bringing in stuff from the states have to hire a full time staffer just to do the paper work bumf to keep the feds happy. Its getting rediculous!

I was thinking that a low-cost solution may be an automatic sprinkler timer. They are available at any hardware/garden store for as little as about 10 to 15 dollars and have relatively flexible timing programs. The one I have here at home is 12V.

Sparkstation:

Excellent! We use the Omron timers quite often in smaller timing applications where it is not feasible to pull in new conductors to a PLC. GA from me.

The sprinkler system timers depend on a pressurized system to let water pass. I did not see any with external contacts to apply power to start the water pump. Did I miss something? And most of them have a battery or draw power from an AC source to operate the motor controlled valves.

Methinks the internet is getting too sophisticated. The first link showed an Irritrol product and when I went to their website to get contact information it asked me for my postal code. Entering my postal code produced a message saying no dealers in my vicinity and to enter another postal code and try again. I tried every possible postal code I knew of for a hundred miles around. There are only four for that whole area. Still nothing. So how do you contact them? They do not make provision for querying by state or province.

More and more curious! Mark; I did a copy and paste of the URL and was told Google did not find anything to match. It asked me if I wanted http://foundrynet.com

Then I started deleting extras from the end. Still no results, even when only www.findernet.com remained. Typing it in yielded a no access allowed message.

In other words the internet apparently does not allow me to access it while you can from another continent. Hmmmm? Curious!

All good advice, however no mention of accuracy, RTC? does it need to be calibrated on a regular basis? Temperature drift? or is it a don't care situation? Just some thoughts.

Hello madness

The Omron Equipment I mentioned earlier (And similar Equipment) is quite accurate, normally within ±20 seconds per year.

Quartz crystal frequency standard operates count-down divide-by circuitry, to give high accuracy, while being reasonably temperature stable.

I'm sure the cattle would not mind waiting a few seconds.

Kind Regards....

Re: Need Long Interval Timer

Thanks Sparkstation for the OMRON reference. Curiously enough, I did use 7 day timer as my first search string. Still no luck and definitely no OMRON listing. I just tried again about five minutes ago. I get the same wrong listings including ads for daytimer which is a personal filing system using a hard copy notebook. Do people still use paper and pencil PDA?

This is a problem I have experienced before. My search with Google comes up with different results than someone on another continent. I have a client in Europe and when I search for a specifc product my Google.ca does not find it. Yet he also uses Google and immediately finds european websites dealing with the subject being searched for. When he sends me the link by email, sometimes I cannot get the website opened. Its almost as if some kind of filtering takes place that directs yme or diverts me on the basis of where my ISP is located geographically. Either that or my ISP is somehow not being given access to certain internet nodes.

Thanks Sparkstation! I was beginning to think I was doing something really dumb or that (heaven forbid) there was a conspiracy. <VBG> I suspected there was a some kind of filtering based on country of origin, I just didn't know how it worked.

This should make my life easier since I am frequently looking for overseas stuff on behalf of other people.

Re: Need Long Interval Timer

Its a don't care situation. To clarify for those who asked. Its not a cattle watering timer. But the location is similar. A half mile long syphon pipe is used to supply a reservoir over a ridge. Not much elevation just enough that gravity flow is not going to work. About once a month the syphon develops an air leak? or similar. The water flow stops. Now someone has to ride up to the water source and use a gasoline pump to prime the syphon pipe again. Invariably the failure is noticed in the evening and often on a Sunday. Its a real PITA to find a ranch hand at that time to do the chore of priming the line. One solution would appear to be having a solar panel pump same as is used for the cattle watering stations turn on once per week and pump up the syphon pipe. the rest of the time it should be fine. Running th epump constantly is not a good idea since that would flood out the reservoir. the syphon works just fine for delivery ( except when it looses its prime)

I'm expecting the solar panel to provide 12V or 24V power to a timer relay. It needs to be a well sealed relay since it will be left outdoors year round in all kinds of weather. We really don't want a battery out there. That would require more frequent periodic maintenance and inspection. Omron or Finders look like the best bet. Now to see if the local stores 50 miles away carry those brands. I know they don't carry such things at the Co-Op feed store.

But I really can't see tinkering around for a day or so to package a chip, not to mention making a circuit board, and testing this thing. I only need one. Not likely to need two. However, thanks for the suggestion CN.

Becuz they run on AC and is not happy with MSW inverter power.

Plus having an inverter in the mix is just one more layer of complication. Remember the original criteria was for an unattended piece of gear well beyond the back forty. The whole purpose was to avoid having to send a range hand back there with a 4 wheel drive and a gasoline powered booster pump every few weeks. We have already tried to figure out where along the half mile of buried pipe the syphon looses it prime due to a tiny vacuum leak. A solar powered pump like we use for catle watering is pretty foolproof. Just need to add a once per week timer.

Try a Cam Timer.

They have mini-motors driven by AC or DC of various voltages, or by air.

The timing is by a suitable motor speed and gear-box, and the output is via mini-electrical or pneumatic switches operated by cams on the shaft connected to the gear-box.

We use Rotolink - look them up.
