Unknown File Type

08/20/2008 4:55 AM

Hi to all,

I just downloaded some 'figures' and 'illustrations' from the UL website, but the file tags are ULG and ULB.

I poked around on Google (not too diligently), but didn't immediatley see anything.

Anyone got a handle on this file type?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Hello DCaD

Which UL website?

There are many.

Advise please, with and preferably the actual webpage you downloaded those files from.

Kind Regards....

Hi ... Sorry to be vague.

We manufacture several products which are UL Registered, and to support these on an ongoing basis, we have access to our files at UL to see updates and to download the specification files.

The site is www.my.home.ul.com , but you can't go beyond without logging in. In our section, there are products listed with specifications and the 'figure' and 'illustration' files, and when I download those they come in as .ulb, or .ulg files.

That's the mystery.

Thanks ...

Re: Unknown File Type

Hi to all ...

Well DUH!!!

I learned something (I like when that happens ).

Knowing by the descriptions that the UL documents, *.ulg and *.ulb were graphics or pictures, I tried to open them from inside of Illustrator. SURPRISE!!! the *.ulg files opened without a problem. But, the *.ulb files reported they were an "unknown type of TIFF compression", and wouldn't open.

SOOOO ... I opened MS Word, and tried to 'insert picture'. I had to change the request to 'all files', but ... SURPRISE AGAIN !!! The *.ulb files opened. SO ... hmmm (me thinking ... not a frequent occurrence it seems ) ... I did the same with the *.ulg files, and they, too, can be inserted as a picture from within MS Word.

[interesting that there is no way (that I can find) to open these files directly ... no 'open with' option ... and when 'searching' for a program to open these, nothing appears]

Anyway, PROBLEM SOLVED ... MUCH THANKS for all your comments, links, and help.

[now, if I could only find some of Sparky's cool animated GIFs ]

You may have come across a very simple means for them to protect the data while still making it available. You can import it as a picture, but cannot edit or modify or re-issue with all the relevant trapping of such important documents.

Here is a source for answers to most questions of this type. Give it a try. It usually comes up with good descriptive info, AND an application and source for manipulating the file. It is http://filext.com/

Hope it helps.

Hi Micah,

The site is great, but there was no informtion for these file types. I was able to use them by importing into Illustrator and Word, but will all my searching, I came up with similar answers ...

Thanks anyway, though ...

Kind regards ...

My apologies for THAT! I guess they can't cover ALL the details, but I've never seen that happen before. I should have looked for the files myself before offering them as the go-to site. They ARE very useful though, and have not missed anything I've needed (your searches are more sophisticated, obviously. Can I follow you around and learn how its done?)

...Oh, crud, this is sounding more and more sarcastic, when I wanted it to be funny! Not my day for funny, I guess.

Well, anyway, I will promise to check out my solutions before offering them in the future, and I apologize for sending you on a goose chase. And, no, I did not get the sense from your answer that you were unhappy with me about it. Quite the contrary. I just feel like I didn't do the job I set out to do, and am unhappy with myself about being too lazy to do it right.

Micah,

STOP, STOP, STOP ... I never had one bad feeling about your post. *I* am sorry if I made you feel that way. Sometimes typed words are not clear to the emotions behind them.

Actually, I found your site very useful, and bookmarked it ... there seem to be many times when I can't find the correct application for files sent to me ... they some from everywhere.

Life is just a school ... it is our own choice to learn or not ... from your information I did learn.

[I heard an interesting story about Thomas Edison when he was trying to find a solution for his new light bulb invention. He knew what he wanted to accomplish, but he couldn't find the correct material to use for he filament. I don't recall the exact number, but I think he performed over 70 experiments, all failures, before he found a solution.

It is said, a reported asked him, "don't you feel bad about so many failures?"

He responded, "They were not failures. Now I know 70 ways that will not work."]

Treat yourself kindly, friend. ALL suggestions and input are valid. Never give up your contributions.

Thanks ... TRULY ... Thanks.

Best regards ...

Words kindly delivered. Words kindly taken.

You didn't offend. I set MYSELF on fire (to munge the intent of your tag-line quote).

Thank you. You are kind.

.ulb & .ulg are similar to .JPG !!

You may either add new file types and associate them with Microsoft Fax Viewer or just rename them to .jpg.

Then you can open it without problem.

An instruction in UL website have told you to "associate it with Microsoft Fax Viewer".
