Installing Windows XP Pro on HP Pavillion

08/20/2008 7:00 PM

Hi All

I have tired to install windows xp pro on a HP Pavillion a1000y computer. The old hard drive got corrupted. The first try I installed a new 160 Gig Hard drive SATA and put XP disk in drive. After "long" type format NTFS the installation started to copy files a 1 % I got an error "unable to copy file xxxx. I got the same error message 20-30 times for different file names. Repeated installation 4 more times and still got the error "unable to copy file xxx" FYI I never got the the same file name to fail - each installation i got 20 -30 different file names unable to copy. I tried 3 different XP install disks (OEM - not copies).

Then I replaced the power supply, cd drive, and disconnectecd all non-ensentials cables (ie front usb, card reader, ect) and got the same results on 3 more installation tries. Still never getting the same file name to fail to copy.

FYI I have tried reseating all cards and cables; still get same "unable to copy file xxxx"

Any suggestion; anyone...

Thank you in advance

George

I tried 3 different XP install disks (OEM - not copies)

Was the attempted install from an XP "recovery disk"? Did XP come preinstalled? Or was some other OS preinstalled?

The CD (you say "disk", verify) must be for that specific PC. Why would you be trying 3 different ones? Where did you find these three? Are they recovery disks for the HP, for some other machine?

The CD's you are using are NFG! Get the proper recovery CD from HP.

Did the PC originally come with SATA drive? What other hardware changes have you made? The recovery CD has drivers for the PC as originally configured. If SATA was not supplied, there is no driver for SATA on the recovery CD.

I have used the disks (CD's) for the orginal installation on other machines (ie each of our computers came with the full version of windows XP Pro and the CD's (disks) and worked for the installation of each computer. Only have one HP computer, all others were custom built from our computer supplier. The HP computer's hard drive (SATA) failed and I replaced the hard drive with a new SATA hard drive and when I tried to install Windows XP Pro, I keep getting the error message "can not copy file xxx". I tried several different Windows XP Pro CD's to try and rule out that the CD had a problem. It does not seem to matter which Windows CD is used; I stil get the above error message.

Yes; the HP computer came with Windows XP Pro preinstalled and No; I did not try to use the recovery CD's HP or other-wise (I do Not have any HP recovery CD's). In fact the orginal HP Hard drive was partitioned with a recovery partiation, but since the orginal Hard drived failed I am unable to use that feature.

"The CD (you say "disk", verify) must be for that specific PC."

Are you saying that this HP computer is propreity and has a "special" Windows XP Pro installation CD? I have built and rehabed many many computers and have always used a windows XP Pro CD without any issues (I mean, I have have issues building computers; but I always usually got the computer up and running). The Windows XP Pro CD's are from the other computers ( 40 + or -) that our company has purchased over the years (so, I have many orginal Windows XP Pro CD's to work with).

I have not added any additonal hardware; just replaced items (Power supply, CD drive, IED cable, SATA cable) trying to resolve this issue.

I have even tried using an IDE hard drive; but still keep getting the error message; "can not copy file xxx".

the futherest that I have gotten during the installation process before getting the first error message is 69%.

I hope this additional information will help.

thank you in advance.

You need XP at a higher SP level. My guess is that you tried to use XP basic and this does not support SATA.

The recovery disk from HP, which you do not have, was at least SP1 so it works. XP basic would work if not for the SATA drive.

The windows XP Pro CD's that I have been using are SP2 level and have worked when used to install on another computer with a SATA hard drive.

In OP you said:

old hard drive "got corrupted"

Reply

Interesting that you did not say

old hard drive "failed", instead "corrupted". Why replace?

Try to duplicate the problem on the old drive. If problem is duplicated, look for "fdisk" (partitioning) problems or "BIOS" problems.

Is the CD/DVD drive good? When my son's laptop failed (presumably HDD), it turned out that the optical drive had also failed. When the CD cannot be "read" the HDD cannot be "written" to.

Yea, the hard drive failed/corrupt - I removed the HD and tried commected and external SATA to USB adaptor and tried to read the contants of the hard drive. Was unable to read data (could see the 2 partitions).

As I was responding I finanly found the problem. Bad RAM. I removed the 2 sticks (256 MB each) and replaced with known good 1 Gig and now just comopleted clean install.

Thank you for your replys.

Great, I'm glad you were able to get back up and running!

Next time run memtest memtest to test ram. Do this first. Actually run it once on a scheduled basis to find bad memory modules.

I had the exactly same behaviour with an IBM T23 and did quite similar measures. Finally it turned out that the ATA-controller for the HD was faulty, especially on copying the files ONTO the destination drive - not on reading FROM installation CD. The indicator therefore was that several different LINUX live CD's just worked fine in this computer and also drives, connected to USB (HD's, memory sticks, etc.) worked fine except the internal ATA-drive.

Bad RAM of course is the next hard to find source of such errors... I just prepared a memtest startup CD and keep in mind this possibility.

Have you checked with HP (heaping pile) for a bios upgrade? I know that thier mother boards run a proprietary bios. I had a friend send his laptop to a local repair shop and they flashed the chipset with a standard bios and trashed the machine. I contacted them (HP) and they gave a link to a non HP web site that had all of HP's bios and some updates and upgrades. I don't have the link at work. But I did a online chat with and they didn't mide giving the link to me when I had the problem.

I have had the exact problem with serveral HPs also with Win2k. The Hard Drive controler what ever the type, is very susceptible to memory errors.

New to this forum, but it seems alot of people answer with out realy knowing what the problem is...............
