Air Bag Light in Honda Civic

08/20/2008 7:41 PM

Hi, My son has a 2003 Honda Civic Dx car. A couple of weeks ago we removed the front seats for cleaning, we disconnected the battery and some wires under the seats. after we reinstalled the seats and reconnected the battery the air bag light on the dash came on,that's when we realized that the driver's side wires under the seat were left disconnected. We reconnected the wires but the light stayed on, we don't know how to turn it off.Money is kind of tight right now and can not afford to take it to a dealership. I s the air bag going to function properly? Can anyone tell us how to turn the light off? thanks

Some of these sensor systems flag a fault and it stays set even if the issue that flags the fault is fixed.

The dealer has a tool to reset this. However, I would stop in at your local Autozone and ask one of the sales persons if they will reset it. They have a tool to do it and it will read out a fault code to let you know what is wrong.

The first step would be to ask them to use their OBD II reader to read out the fault code. Find out what the fault is, then have them do a reset.

This is free of charge at Autozone. The dealer can do it, but it will cost you money.

I don't think they're allowed to reset faults, (at least in The People's Republic), but perhaps only for emission issues. You can buy a OBDII reader, with reset function, for about $60. Not a bad investment, always a good tool to have around.

Sometimes these faults may reset on their own after about 40 starts.

I have one, but you can have it done for free at Autozone and yes, they are allowed to reset the fault. I had it done on one of my cars.

However, I think OBD II was post 1995 and OBD is the correct format before that. Either way, Autozone would be my first stop.

Oh ya, pre OBDII. Sometimes you can reset these by disconnecting the battery for several minutes. I think I remember one of my cars had a reset button in the glove box.

But I concur, Autozone.

I had a similar problem with a Ford a few years ago. A wiring loom under the carpet and seat mounting was trapped and framing on the floor pan. Try removing the seats again and check that no cables have been squashed. Good luck!!

This is a common problem on the Vauxhall Vectra that I drive, the connector under the seat can be disturbed if the seat is moved & the airbag light comes on, I have a light on at the moment. Previous posters are right, it has to be turned off with the right OBD2 reader but many garages have these. Luckily I have access to a code reader & have reset this light myself in the past.

NOTE, if your car works the same as mine, if you have an accident whilst the airbag light is on, the airbags will not deploy.
