Automobile Exhaust

I'd like to know wat is the inventions& researches done on automobile exhaust.

Emissions , design or both?

The systems improved a lot in the past 60 odd years.

Sulphur, lead etc was removed. Efficiency's improved. New designs were made. For example free-flow and the 6 stroke engine.

Are the efforts enough? Maybe not!
