SF6 GAS LAEK INTO 400/132KV POWER TRANSFORMER SUSPECT

08/24/2008 4:22 AM

Dear friends

During routine maintenance activity i.e DGA analysis on oil filled Power transformer of 400/132kV rating it was found that H2 content was increased. Suspect the following:

1.SF6 leak into the oil or

2. some kind of Partial Discharge activity somewhere inside the tarnsformer.

Can item no. one occur. If so, how come H2 gas is is formed. Transformer oil is normally Nynas and the GIB duct is SF6.

How can the above be verified and how can we solve the problem.

Would be grateful if solutions are proposed.

Arrange for a replacement and trade out with the supplier who will have it repaired.

Can you forward your full DGA results.

Looking at one parameter is sometimes not the best thing.

have you been doing annual DGA testing and observe a relatively sudden increase in the H2 level?

Hi,

1. Your Gas Insulated Busduct GIB is for the Bus bar through Busduct only. It is no way connected for any SF6 leakage from the Transformer. And alos the Bushes are hermeticaly sealed.

2. Hydrogen content in the transformer increases if the tarnsformer oil conataminates. The if you look into the proeprties of Transformer Oil it is made up of Hydrocarbons. the Oil started to contaminate and the hydrogen start started to break up. Please conduct Dissolved Gas Analyisis (DGA). Test the Oil of Main tank and OLTC separtely and Replace the Oil which ever is contaminated or both.

Regards,

N.Suresh

Most answer here are from people with no knowledge of DGA.

SF6 have nothing to do with H2.

Do follow up DGA every 3-6 month and look at the trend. If only H2 is getting up, them is some Corona and hydrolysis of water.

SF6 may affect H2 reading because its peak is in very close retention time of H2 and make multiple peak or overlapped reading causing larger area under H2 and SF6 curve.

Please check more info from net to confirm my comment.
