oil leakage from transformer breather

08/24/2008 5:35 AM

Dear friends,

Recently, we charged a 22 KV / 0.433 KV distribution transformer of 1.25 MVA. For 24 Hours the transformer was on no load and everything was fine. Once the transformer was put on load (i.e., breaker of 1250 A feeder of power control center (PCC) was closed), oil started leaking from the breaker. Can someone please explain the reason. I have googled on it. But not found satisfactory answer

Regards

Hello "Guest",

Please advise make/model of OCB.

Please advise from exactly where on the OCB the oil was leaking.

Kind Regards....

Oh Brotherrrrr! Sounds like something is overloading somewhere between the transformer and such switching device. Waaaoouuuhh... Better to review installation with spec. to determine what is wrong there my friends.

Too much toxic stuff in a transformer so I would not give you info that might in some way cause harm you or others.

Hello Guest,

If the load is within the 1.25 MVA rating, then I might suspect the problem MAY be that the transformer has too much oil in it. The oil will expand as it heats up under load. Check the load current, oil level, and oil temperature.

Dear JB of NM,

Thank you for your reply. After the joint discussion with our seniors in the dept., we came to a conclusion, which matches exactly with your reply.

Mr.Gaitonde,

Probably the transformer was not stored properly. Water must have entered the system and when the heat increases along with the load the water boils and pushes the oil out.

Best option now is to drain the transformer, fill with fresh oil and reuse the old oil after checking for water content.

Ragotham.

Dear Mr. Ragotham,

Thank you for the reply. It has provided a new dimension to our discussions here at site. Sorry for the spelling mistake in my querry. The word "breaker" in the main passage is to be replaced by "breather". Mr. sparkstation has objected regarding this.

RTFM !! - Read The Factory Manual

Did you stop at the right fill mark or fill it right full?

Expansion from heat created under load will cause expansion of the oil.

Hi,

Foa ny transformer once if you load the transformer, due to internal heat developed the oil level rises up. But leakage through breather may look stange. In normal case the breather is taken from the conservator. May there be leake in the piping from the Transformer Coservator to the breather pipe.

Regards,

N.Suresh
