It's easiest to understand how a FET works. (Field Effect Transistor)

A voltage applied to the gate causes a field withing the device to pinch off the flow of electrons (current) through the device.
It's like controlling the water flow through a hose pipe by pinching it between your fingers.

The gate itself draws virtually no current (micro amps) and is voltage controlled ... the device itself can handle amps through the Drain-source.

Thus a very small current is contolling a high current...this is effectively amplification.

A regular transistor has a small gurrent into the base controlling the current through the collector emitter.

I'm sure you will find fuller explanations in wiki, etc
