MOTOR SELECTION

09/02/2008 3:34 AM

DEAR FRIENDS,

FOR THE SAME LOAD RATING, IF WE USE SCIM & SLIP RING IM, WHICH WILL CONSUME LESS POWER.

  1. Please turn off Caps Lock. Many readers consider all-capitals use to be akin to SHOUTING, and very rude.
  2. Please define the terms SCIM and IM, for the benefit of the interested reader.

Dear Guest,

Please turn off your caps lock and stop SHOUTING, as it hurts the eyes.

I am assuming that SCIM = Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor and IM = Induction Motor.

I don't think that there is any easy answer to your question. It depends on several factors, one of which is how fully loaded the motors are. I would not expect much difference at full load.

The power consumption depends upon the efficiency of the motor particularly the eff at the load point.Assuming that u have two motors of equal efficiency and same polarity but one is slip ring and the other being cage power consumption will be the same. However Max demand can be more in cage motors due to high starting current and low pf during acceleration.Slip ring or cage depend upon the application. Each has its own advantage and disadvantage. But cage motors are preferred due to their ruggedness and simplicity of construction and ease of maintenance. With advent of inverters their applications have increased.
