power rating ac motors 1phase vs 3phase

09/02/2008 5:08 AM

Hello all

A single phase 220V ac brush motor running @50Hz directly driving a circular cutting disc

draws 15A under full load (approx 3.3kW) 1300rpm.

If i was to directly drive the same blade with a 3 phase 4 pole AC induction motor what is the smallest i could use with regards to power rating? Considering the difference in torque, between directly and indirectly excited armature

Thanks From Brendon

You should be able to just look at the HP of the motor on the single phase motor and match it to a similar HP 3 phase motor. The only issue that I could see is frame size. I believe a 3 phase motor of similar HP as the single phase would have a smaller frame size, so you may have to go with a similar frame size motor (which would mean more HP) if you do not wish to reengineer the mounting.
