miniature vacuum/blower unit

09/02/2008 10:56 AM

I'm on a new project that requires me to find a very small electric vacuum/blower unit. Initially, I tried a hand-held keyboard vacuum but that wasn't strong enough even after doubling the voltage.

I visited a hobby store and tried an electric fuel pump which had enough vacuum but fell short on the blower.

This could be a plug in or battery operated unit. Any ideas where I might locate this beast?

Thanks,

Bruce Honaker

How about a central locking compressor for a car! Runs on 12vdc! what sort of air movement do you need! large volume small force, small volume large force etc! Can you give us a bit more info? Another option is to try a search on GlobalSpec, they have a large variety!

Thanks, but a central locking compressor would be too large. I need to keep this very small. I'm looking for any assembly that weighs less than 1 pound.

Ideally, the blower part would provide 10-20psi and the vacuum part would operate 1cfm minimum.

small but powerful.

But to get 10-20psi would be difficult with a fan blade.

I'm sure the DC car vacuum cleaner are too small or even hair dryers.

you would need some type of piston or diaphram pump but to get one with those types of outputs and weight, it may not last too long.

I have used some Thomas air compressors with good results. I have bought mine from Grainger. They also carry another brand that I do not recall. There are also small compressors that are designed for occasional tire inflating, made by Campbell Hausfield. These units have air compressors that run on 12 volts, and are very small. They would not live long pumping 100 psi all day, but if all they had to do was 20psi, they should live a long time. NAPA also has a small 12 volt air compressor that is used with an air tank and air horn. Good hunting.

They make adaptors for the different size hoses of shop vac's or vaccum hoses that fit on the end of the hose and go down to very small sizes.

I have adaptor with tubes of 1/4 in and a brush on the end for cleaning keyboards and other small things.

You can buy shop vac's with suction and blower connections for the hose and get extentions of all kinds. I think I got mine at Lowe's Building supplies.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful suggestions.

After a lot of research I found the perfect unit for this application. Gast Mfg. makes an oiless Diaphragm pump which runs on 6DCV. I ordered it yesterday.
