I haven't tried it yet, but I have heard some good reviews about this free insulation program for download -

Area of pipe for insulation = ᅲ r^2 L

=22/7 x (D x D)/4 x Length of pipe

=3.142 x D^2/4 x L

Where D = Outside diameter of pipe

L = Length of pipe to be insulated

To calculate the area of insulation material

3.142 x (D+Thickness of Insulating wool)^2/4 x L

Regards.

A = ᅲ x D x L

where ᅲ = 3.1416, D is outside diameter in units of L, L is the pipe length, and A is the area of insulation in square (units of D and L)

Pipe insulation is supplied ready-formed for a given outside diameter of pipe. All that the supplier needs is the length of the pipe, its outer diameter and the thickness of the insulation required.
