weight is calculated as

(1ft).(1ft).((1/4in).(1/12)).(steel-density mass per cf)

And the density of steel is about 7800 kg/m3. (I usually use 8000 for simplicity and a bit of safety) Doing the conversion will do Rickzid no harm

Cheers......Codey

Alright, so you have repackaged the calculation in 'inches' measurement unit, while I have proffered the Calculation Procedure in 'feet' measurement units.

Sorry, I didn't mean to step on any toes. It's just easier sometimes to work in inches, so I gave the alternate formula and filled in the appropriate constant.

O.K. Let's get more specific. It actually weighs 10.2075 lbs. But, that is if the size is right on. Most fabricators in my area just use 10.5 lbs. as most hot rolled, run-of-the-mill steel is oversize in thickness. Also, steel suppliers in my area use that as the billing weight.

For me, it's not about how much one knows, it's how one can find answers.

Google has become one of my greatest resources. In response to your question, I simply typed in "weight of plate steel" and the first 'hit' was

http://www.chapelsteel.com/weight-steel-plate.html

It's a cool little calculator to put in length, width, and thickness.

It gave the answer as 10.2096 pounds.

We are always glad to help, but you can often get the answers to these types of questions as easily as can others.

Kind regards,

I referenced the weight according to our inventory of 1/4" mild steel plate.

I have two references:

- 1/4" Plate stocked in 4' x 10' sheets is listed at 10.2lbs/sqft.

- 1/4" x 12" Flat Bar is listed at 10.2lbs/ft.

So I would have to say that your answer is probably the most accurate.

What steel?

Weight is calculated based on relative density (ρ) which is is the SG (specific gravity) for a given material compared with one cm3 of water @4°C. (That equals 1.0)

  1. SG for rolled steel is 7.56
  2. SG for cast steel is 7.85

As it looks as if you are not the investigating type, will make your life even easier, Calculate the volume based on metric system, 30.48x30.48x6.35, now multiply the result by the SG. and this is the answer.

Googling "Specific Gravity" brought 3 million answers in less than a second. Googling "Laziness" brought even more in even less time.

Wangito,

That is below the belt.

But, look as I have now adopted as a signature, teach the boy to fish and he will eat everyday, but give him fish and he will eat may be for a day. You obviously are trying to teach the originator of the question how to think about as well as solve his problem, while our other colleague not wanting to be bothered any more simply gave him the answer. Different strokes for different folks

Well I don't think so, This CR-4 is

With emphasis on the "Engineer's", at least this is the heading. So he should be able to do a bit more than just throw a question at us, especially one with a elementary school level.

Wangito.

BTW: I have visited your website. pretty impressive.

Using the reference manual that is on the corner of my desk I found that steel sheet in 1/4" thickness weighs in at 10.20 lbs/sq ft. This is based on the Specific gravity of 7.854 or 489.6 lbs/cubic ft. Good luck on your project.

You can use the techniques proffered by these experts, or you could just take a 1/4th inch thick piece of plate steel 1 ft on an edge and weigh it.. duh!

Here's a tool that estimates weight of round, square and rectangle carbon steel plate. Just enter dimensions and hole diameter if any and it does the rest. Pretty handy.

Plate Weight Calculator

Nice post, and good answer ... thanks, and WELCOME to CR4, where there are problems, solutions, and as you may have already seen, a lot of chatter ... most in good fun.

Take care, and kind regards
