Don't think "bleachers" means a lot to folks in the UK (can't speak for the rest of the world). I only knew 'cause I've read the John Grisham book.

So what is that kind of open outdoor (or indoor) seating called over yonder? Inquiring minds want to know!

Don't think there is much of a specific name, just benches or seating. My Ex and Daughter are just on their way back from seeing A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Globe Theatre - they just have seating (à la bleachers) - or the Yard (standing).

Same kind of thing with football (soccer) grounds - depending on the league & venue, the seating could be planks or fancy moulded plastic things - except you may be sitting in the stands .

Well, the term seems to be an appropriate one - open seating under the sun tends to have a "bleaching" effect on those seated there. They're also often known as "the cheap seats" as opposed to fancier "box seats" that are usually covered and sometimes walled on three sides.

"How to Write a How to Write Book" - metabooks are cool .

Got one stashed away somewhere called "Programming and Metaprogramming the Human Biocomputer".

Often wondered what it's about. I may read it, someday.

Well, the oddness goes back some 75 years which is about when George Bernard Shaw published a classic: The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism. This wording has become a sort of a catch-phrase in some circles. It seems that it hasn't died.

Obviously it's not your lack of reading, it's one of the few advantages of my extreme old age!
