Truck Supply Standards

09/29/2006 6:59 AM

We're trying to develop some equipment that could be used on haulage trucks. We need to know what sort of transients and surges that might be expected from the 24V batteries due to starting, load switching and charging with full battery or with battery in poor condition (like high resistance).

Does anybody know where we might start looking for a standard for what we can expect?

I've been involved in many automotive projects..... and the voltage that we have to cope with in an automotive environment is severe!!

For cold weather starting with the starter cranking the engine a low voltage of only 5 volts must be catered for.

The high voltages can be expected to reach 60 Volts with spikes in the region of thousands.

These firgures are for a 12 Volt car system so doubling them should give you an idea of the range to be expected....

Thanks Electroman! Any hints on where I could get or download a copy of the general specs for such a supply?

The specifications we have used do vary from manufacturer to manufacturer....

Ford do seem to have the most widely used specs though.... I'm not sure if they publish them....?

I had a copy of the test specs, but I'm not sure where.... I might be some time!!!

Most current highway trucks have 12V systems with a lot of battery capacity.

There are SAE standards which cover such things as component loading, starting draws, etc. Alternator suppliers can probably also provide a pretty respectable answer to your query.
