Berthing facility expansion - how??

09/10/2008 10:00 AM

Hi there, i have been given a task on a berthing facility expansion project. it is currently berthing 10000DWT-15000DWT vessels. this vessel bring clinker&gypsum to the cement factory that i work in. Recent plans of expansion has been made, and i have been asked to plan an expansion.

I am now gonna look at expanding the jetty to cater for 20000DWT-40000DWT vessels. I've not much experience in jetty and marine engineering. I am currently in consultant with some civil engineering consultants and maritime engineers.

But I have not forgotten you, my values friends. I need you to inout your ideas. Please ask me questions to clarify this problem more clearly for you.

need your input.

Thanks in Advance.

Hubert

Dear Sir,

The first parameters you will have to assemble are those that the :Owners, Port Authority, Pilots etc who use or will use this new facility have agreed upon as being the standards and restrictions.

Among these to be considered in the design are :

1.Tidal and current movemenrts,

2.Wind strenght limits not to be exceeded for approval of berthing

3.Whether the berthing is : unaided i.e without or with tugs, with or without bow thrusters.

4.Is the facility likely to have translatory waves whilst the vessels are along side,

5.Do you have hurricanes and or earthquakes (what are the strenghts)

6.What are the depths alongside to be planned i.e. - 12 meters

7.Have you or the Port Authority done any soil testing in the area ?

8.What type of piles have been used on the existing unloading pier ?

9.Lay out of the proposed new berth showing the dolphins , if any , enabling the unloading cranes to straddle a definite receiving hopper for the clinker/gypsum ( In some cases the unloading section which may have : conveyors , etc , is not part structurally of the berth. Only the dolphins are ) This makes for cheaper construction though the dolphins have to be linked by : walkways for mooring of: bow and stern spring lines as well as bow and stern lines . Generally the breast lines can be accomodated on the main structure or on the shore . That is if the unloading berth is not a ""finger- pier".

Once you have asembled all these aspects and criteria , come back to us and we will give you the formulaes for you to check out your design and have it approved
