Tesla Turbine! What do I need to know about how to make one?

09/10/2008 8:13 AM

O/K Gather round all you "egg-head" types, I wont to carry on where Tesla (God bless him) left off!

I need to generate 50Kva deep in the bush away from civilisation as we know it.

What we have to play with is lots of FLAT water (lake), huge amounts of rubbish (field crop residue), and very little money. Also have a rather good grasp and capability of "bush" engineering not least of which was gained from building nuclear reactors and subs many years ago before I saw the "error" of me ways and came to Uganda to try to make things right for me past "sins".

After much discussion (on this site) have decided that a Tesla Turbine would not only be a good way to go but also is a technology that desperately is in need of a "leg-up".

O/K where do we start - and I am looking "Practical" here things like SIZE / Amounts etc.

Bring it in, Guys

Thanks

H

Don't do any more sins, rather recognize your error quicker otherwise you may end up in Zim.

Have you calculated the volume of waste yet?

Waste (Fuel) ain't a problem - that we got plenty of (believe me) It's the engineering that I'm getting me head into.

We're going to have to kind of "backward" engineer this thing in as much as the KNOWN facts are :-

1) Needed power = 50Kva

2) Fuel availability = infinite

3) Demand = 100% constant

SO!

First off, what Dia. and width for the Turbine runner (Tesla) and then what shaft size to transmit ???Hp to generate 50Kva.

Please remember, I'm just an Auld bush Engineer - I tend rather to the "Lets make the bloody thing and then see what we have to do to make it work!"

Would probably fit in rather well in Zim.

Thanks

H

If you forget about the mysterious energy that will be added from nowhere you will have to consider the constant volume of waste needed to generate the 50 KVA.

With Uganda about 600 km from top to bottom you have to consider transporting that stream of material for an average of 200km. That alone may upset the economical balance.

The distribution of the power with normal earthling methods will also be expensive.

Look on Utube for numerous examples as well as "How Stuff Works" for basics.

Hire someone who does know.

Look at Boundary layer effect and bladeless turbines

Er! Thanks Pal.

"Hire some one who does know?"

In Uganda???

Around here, still looking for the second stone with which to be able to "bang together".

But thanks for the thought anyway.

Guess that depends on your definition of "second" stone...

OOOOO/K

Right

I think I get you, BUT where exactly do I plug me welder in?

Is there a hole in the front or is there one in the rear so I can "stuff-it-up-the-arse"?

Thanks

http://www.teslaengine.org/main.html

google for others.

maybe if you outlined more of the parameters of your project, you could get more help. The tesla turbine is not considered a particularly well proven technology. If you are in a tropical region, you may be able to harness solar power effectively. Obviously you have some money and access to machining equipment or you wouldn't be proposing the tesla turbine.

Hello Ouststiger:

As to how you drive your chosen generator , you have more choices than Mr. Teslas motor/pump. There is nothing wrong with Tesla Motor/Pumps its just kind of like reinventing the wheel and your clearly not ready for that task. Power is made by moving magnets past coiled wires and receiving the power out put. How that is done , varies.

Perhaps, you could use what you have today, if you have something like a car or truck and materials that will burn and give you a useable off gas , ( I think you mentioned field crop residues ) . A quick study of Woodgas from switch grass , would be very much in order and this gas produced will run a common IC Engine, car - truck or stationary motor. If Europe could do it in WW2 , so can you, with a small amount of study. Heres a link to the Woodgas group page at Yahoo.

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/WoodGas/

Now that you have an engine with fuel, you need the magnets & wire coils .

If your going to generate power you must 1st have a generator; so I would suggest a study of the basics of power production so you can target the KVA you seek with the right equipment . As that your online , a web site with loads of info on just how to build your own generator, to suit yourself is at :

http://www.fieldlines.com/

Join the groups I noted and first read the all the relavent material given , study the pictures, drawings and data before asking questions and you should be on your way to a proper generator, that will provide for your needs without having to reinvent the wheel.

Perhaps later, after you have the time & the power on to play with, you can work in a higher plane and upon Mr. Teslas Designs too.

Good Luck and Be Good In School.

Best Regards.

Re: Tesla Turbine! What do I need to know about how to make one?

Hi! Matey

Thanks for the input however the electric side of things is taken care of in as much as we intend to just buy an "off-the-shelf" generator package (less power unit of course) which surprisingly enough are available here.

The "focus" is getting the right "Prime Mover" (Power capability / running cost / environment friendship / matching to available fuel etc.) to drive the brought in gen set.

We are intending to run at a constant full power, "dumping" excess generated power over demand via an electronic ALC into a ballast load thereby "side-stepping" the primary problem of regulation. Don't worry the "Dumped" ballast load WILL be used for another useful purpose not wasted - that would be not only "silly" but contrary to everything we preach about fuel conservation.

Bio-mass we got aplenty (water also) and growing more every day. What we need to find is the "simplest" way to convert our "excess" bio-mass into usable electric.

Initially the choose was a Stirling but after an in-depth consultation (over several beers!) someone came up with this Tesla Turbine idea. After several more beers it was looking even better - after changing to "shorts" no problems could be found (until the next morning when the project was deemed "STARTED" - thanks Guys)

This plant is needed to be run 24/7 (no time-off for good behaviour) automated as far as possible (Fire-and-forget?) so that rules out Soler and all the other "tree-hugger solutions.

Interesting that you are into "rammed earth construction" - have built many stabilised soil structures here in Uganda and would be interested to compare notes sometime - but not here, this is for our Tesla stuff!

Thanks

H

Google Lindsay Books, search Dave Gingery. There is a book on the Tesla turbine built with "bush" methods.

Got a web address by any chance?

Amazon etc. can take up to a year or more to get here. In bush - remember?

Thanks

Look up http://www.phoenixnavigation.com/ptbc/home.htm

I have almost completed my own 120 mm diameter Tesla turbine. It has ten discs made of 0,5 mm stainless and 0,5 mm disc spacing. Have no idea if it's going to work... I hope to make 1- 3 kW with 15 Bar steam.

I plan to have it operational in the summer of 2009.

Look up tt120 and other projects at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/TheTeslaTurbineList/

Good luck!
