ASTM E446-98 adjuncts

09/10/2008 11:22 PM

Does anybody know if the details contained in the three adjuncts to the ASTM standard E446-98 'Standard Reference Radiographs for Steel Castings Up to 2 in' can be veiwed anywhere. $4000 is a bit much to pay for sight-unseen documents? I have already bought a copy of the standard itself.

Try a local lab that does this kind of work.

New dimension metals A-lab subsidiary in Dayton Ohio does this kind of work. Well, in house in cabinet, not on site as far as I know. As we have no details as to your location, this is best we can do.

For the importance of this kind of work, we would presume that official traceable references would be de rigeur...

They use standard samples to x-ray each severity level of each discontinuity featured. They charge so much because each one is "hand made". Technically it isn't a "document" per say, but a visual guide to use in tandem with the written porition of E446. Each page has five panels of film (if I remember correctly they are each about 5"x7" approx). Rest assured, they are worth the money and piece of mind to have on hand. I worked in an x-ray lab and they were just standard issue, had to have them. They also use three different levels of radiation so you can try to match what you are using (or your supplier is using) because they do effect the look of the indications and film. BUT, I am in the same boat you are and am trying to find a copy that's less than $4600.
